Average shoulder width.
« on: August 25, 2015, 08:58:52 PM »

Hello I'm curious if anyone got some info on the average shoulder width?

Also curious how much it differs with height. I'm quite thin, my shoulders are only 45CM across, however I haven't visited a gym in years so there is some room for improvement.

I am 178,5CM and I weigh about 60-63 Kg for reference. Will my build be able to support a height of 183-184 without looking frail and thin?

I doubt it does. I'm 5'2 and everyone tells me I have wide ass shoulders. 8)
Maybe I'm an exception.

I will measure my shoulders when I find my rouler. 60-63kg is not much for someone your height, perhaps you should put on some mass.
I myself used to be quit thin but I never went below 69kg´s at the same height, I put on 5-6 kg´s during the last year due to the gym and an apropriate diet. Many people have told me that I appear much broader now eventough my shoulder width only increased by a tiny bit. Your legs will be thicker as well, so it´s even harder to tell then.
5-6cm´s of additional length shouldn´t be a problem though since not many people are attentive to proportions anyways.

Yes I've got some room to widen out, though I've always been a bit thin. My concern is if I will have the width to carry a height like 184CM. Will try to measure my dads shoulders, his are noticeably narrow for his height.

I bet if you did a 6 mth to a 1 year bulking/ mass building program you might not even want to do CLL at that point. From where you currently stand, aesthetically, it is 10x more beneficial for you to add muscle and size than height since you are already a pretty decent height.

I have the illusion of wider shoulders from hitting the gym, so I can attest to the benefits of weight training.

Right, exactly. I might be 50CM across after a year or two of serious bodybuilding and that might be my limit anyway. So you can see my issue.

I think your problem is that you are just too slim, 63kg is realy light for your height. Just put on some kilos and you´ll be fine. I ´m 12kg´s heavier than you at the same height and I´m not fat at all.
As soon as you put on some muscles and fat your shape will appear broader in total, not just your shoulders. Getting thicker arms and leggs is beneficial when it comes to hiding your LL.

Shoulder width could be improved a lot gaining muscle mass. If you are only 63kg for your height you could change this measurement by a good amount centimeters

Thanks, I do have a light build but I don't look like I'm starving or anything. What would be a respectable width for someone who is 183-185CM then?

I've just measured it and it's something around 55-57cm's. It may vary a bit since I've measured it alone.

I should add that I've measured it from shoulder to shoulder on my backside.
If I put the ruler above my chest I get a shoulder width of 52-53cm's.

u cant measure with ruler.. u need a tailor to measure the back of your shoulders with a flexible tape

I just called it a ruler but I measured it with a tape  :P I got measured by a tailor once and I don't have his measurements anymore unfortunately.

Yes I think you might have measured incorrectly, 55-57CM is huge. That would be wide even for a professional bodybuilder and like you said, your shoulders don't look very wide in the picture you posted.

I measure from the front, though I do it myself. http://www.wikihow.com/Measure-Shoulder-Width

Edit- apparently you should preassure your arms towards your legs, when I do that I measure closer to 44CM -yeesh.

My build is very much like this guy though, so I think it looks good at my current height.

Problem is, can I pull of another 5CM?

The guide I saw used a different point to start the measurement, anyways my mom just measured it and it was 51,5cm's.
I did it with the method that was described in your link.
Don't worry about that.
Tall slim guys are considered attractive, I often face the problem that I can't wear a coat because it looks better on guys who have narrower shoulders and appear therefore taller. Male models tend to have a more feminin build in general.
I always wanted to get a burberry coat but it didn't fit me well enough (due to my statue) to be worth spending the money.

Impressive, that's very wide. I am naturally just 2CM shorter than you and still my shoulders are 6-7CM more narrow. Yet I've been complimented on my wide shoulders believe it or not; it's strange that you don't look very wide in the picture you posted. Maybe it's the angle?

I look extremly narrow on the picture I posted, but I had around 8% bodyfat at that time so it makes me look even narrower.
I think you are acutally taller by a small amount since I'm only 178-179 and your morning height is close to 180 If I remmeber correctly.
I don't like the idea of uploading many pictures of me, but I can assure you that the numbers are correct we measured it again and it was between 51-52cm's.
Edit:
I am now on 12-13% bodyfat so it's quit a substantial increase.

You always will have time to bulk your shoulders, you need just to go to gym (or pool)... I have about 48 cm shoulders and I'm about 165 cm tall.

Crap, what's wrong with me, and why don't they look narrow on my frame if I'm 14CM taller than you?

There is nothing wrong with you, Uppland. Maybe you don't need to become taller, probably you need to get more weight. I noticed that, from the point of view of women, a short man is often equivalent to a tall/average man too thin. Why don't you try to go to gym before to consider LL: you will obtain a similar result for your aesthetic with less pain and less money  ;)

Perhaps, still I would like to be at least comfortably average. A small increase shouldn't throw my proportions off too much.

I'm in a club at the moment wearing  completely flat soles and I highly feel the need of LL. I feel tiny here, hardly any guy is shorter than me.
Just go for it Uppland and don't worry too much about your shoulder width, hit the gym and you'll be fine.

How tall are you then mate, and where do you live?

I'll heed your advice I think, I obviously feel bad about being below average, and like you said once I hit the gym it'll probably be different.

I am austrian and my height is 178≈, I live in zurich now where the average is a bit lower but it all changes as soon as you go to the clubs. 90% of the people here are not swiss (loads of germans) so I'm getting towerd all the time. Feels just like home, in terms of the height difference.

Thing is, if it's anything like Sweden, young people in clubs are clustered around 185CM so what can you do?

If you lengthen 5CM you'll still be just average at best in this kind of crowd and if you go further your proportions will end up looking awkward. Is it even worth it to go through all this hazzle or is it a lost cause?

I don't think that being average is a bad thing, I never wanted to be taller than others. Just being shorter sucks, yeah 185 is very common among people our age. My goal is 6,5 cm's so I'd be 185≈.
I'be happy with anything above 183 I think.

I agree, I only want to be comfortably average. Being tall would be ideal of course but I'd be satisfied with anything that let's me blend in.

I think I'll be good at 183CM as well but not if my body end up looking weird. Will your proportions be able to handle a 6-7CM increase?

I hope so.
My wingspan is quit high at 187\188.
7 cm's is the upper limit imo, everything above that looks odd very quickly. If I see that my proportions are getting weird I'll stop at 5cm's.
I have to admit that I'm not sure yet weither I'll do the surgery or not, there are times where I just want to forget about all that.
