18 years old - want to grow taller.
« on: July 18, 2015, 12:43:17 PM »

Hi there,

Just a few questions regarding the LL surgery:

- I'm currently 5'8". I feel as though I'm short whenever I'm around other people. I want to be at least 5'11". If I do this surgery and grow my desired height, will I look disproportionate e.g. long legs but short arms, short torso, small hands, short neck, small head, etc.?
- Will my bones be just as strong as they were before this surgery? I really do want to play sports!
- How painful is it and how long does it take to recover?

If I decide not to pursue this surgey, my other options is HGH, but would my growth plates be closed at 18?

Thanks,
Pierre

Your bones will be just as strong as before surgery.  The new bone is completely natural and strong.

LL is a painful process, and it's not just the pain from having your legs stretched out; it's the discomfort of lying in bed all day which gets really old really fast, trust me.

The recovery time depends on the method you use to lengthen.  External-only methods will take longer to recover from than internal or hybrid methods.  If you lengthen 3 inches with LON like I did, you can expect to be walking without crutches after 7-8 months.

Hi,

1.It depends how much do you care about your proportions. If you do 7,5cm on tibias they will look slightly longer but no drama. It's only LL patients who are obsessed with proportions.

2.Many people are back to sport post LL.

3. It is very painful. Some days will be better, some worse. Depends from method etc but for 7,5cm it will be around 8-9 months. Your still young so it should go smoothly.

4. Who said HGH will be option for you?? HGH is given only to some age limit and definitely not to people who just wants to be taller. You must have really bad idea how it works but considering your age nobody will even consider you for HGH. Your growth plates are probably closed already. Mine got closed before my 16th b-day.

-5'8 is only slightly short by US standards. Average height's 5'9, but alright, I won't doubt how you feel. How weird your proportions will look depends on your current upper body:legs ratio. If they're equal-ish you'll look fine. If your legs are already significantly longer than your torso it could be odd.

-From what I've seen, yes. But if you're an athlete it's highly recommended that you don't do this because many people have said that you'll never be the same athlete you were before. You could have 90% or more of your previous athletic ability (and 10% reduction is quite a lot!)

-For 3 inches, anywhere from 6 months to 1 year. (depends on your method)

I asked an endocrinologist about HGH and there's no way they're going to give it to you.
-HGH is meant for little people/midgets who are below the normal growth range. There's a formula (mom's height + dad's height in inches + 5 inches divided by 2 or something) and if you're in the 5 inch (up and down) range of this height, you are normal.
-HGH is highly dangerous. It increases EVERYTHING, it could expand an organ or have some serious effects. Limb Lengthening is safer than HGH.

So forget about HGH.

I'm not an expert though! I'm doing this next year when I turn 18, so 'luck to the both of us.

We were told, when my son's growth plates closed, that growth hormone would only cause the nose and ears to continue growing.  So, when the growth plates are closing, nothing is going to help, except LL later on.

Nose, Ears, hands, feet, facial bones and even your skull. I would say that the risks and cost involved may not be worth it for a young kid whose plates have already closed. Especially because you would have to be considerably wealthy to afford the amount of HGH to bring about these changes, and by the time that happens your organs have surely already grown. IMO though, in an ideal world males with stunted development and closed plates would still receive HGH therapy.

at what age did they close. My son's pelvis and spine is still open. Did they check those, or just the long bones. I am in dilemma whether continue the GH or not.

His plates were closing at the age of 14.  He gained just over one inch after that meeting and then he was done.
