Hello,
I live in U.S and I am planning for surgery with Dr. Salameh in Germany. My question is for the residents of U.S. who had their surgeries done outside U.S. and did physical therapy and follow up Xrays in U.S. Does insurance covers these costs after mentioning cosmetic surgery? Should I not mention cosmetic surgery to the primary care doctor ordering Xrays and prescription for physical therapy? Thank you.

I think it depends on the insurance.

I had my surgery in Mumbai, came back and was referred by my GP to a local orthopedist. Told him truthfully that I did 6 cm of cosmetic lengthening and needed to get x-rays to send back to my surgeon once a month. All visits were covered by my HMO through Kaiser Permanente, so I only made a $40 co-pay for x-rays and an additional $40 co-pay for examinations once per month. My frame removal was covered by insurance also and only cost me $250. Physiotherapy sessions are going to take place once a week and my co-pay is $20 per session.

Thank you KiloKAHN, for your prompt reply! This is very helpful. My insurance is Aetna POS II. I am not sure if its a good idea to call them. When I searched online, it says specifically that they do not cover any treatment/ surgery for height increase, but I am not sure about the physical therapy, Xrays and local orthopedic clinic visit, which is all related to the surgery itself.

It depends on doctor and insurance company. It's how doctor approach to insurance company. You have to work with the doctor!

For example dr.m and dr. R patient use insurance for therapy and hardware removal in most part but not with dr. Paley.

One guy who did CLL with me last year went home but he could not get therapy covered by insurance.
