time frame for LON
« on: April 21, 2015, 06:21:25 PM »

Can someone please break down the time frame for lengthening 6-7cm on tibias using LON?

I assume it takes just over 3 months or slightly longer for lengthening. Then how soon do the frames come off after lengthening? You consolidate without frames correct? Would 5 months post first surgery be long enough to be walking without frames and with crutches or a cane?

Thank you in advance for any responses.

you should read the  various diaries here and at the other foruum

the overwhelming majority of patients need over 12 months to get back to normal

Thanks for response crimson! Yeah I've actually read 6-7 diaries in full whilst taking notes. I'm just trying to figure out how long to book my stay for. The Dr said 3-5 months, which I assume is how long it takes for the patient to recover from the second op. so I think if I stayed in an apartment for 5 months that should be long enough to go home using crutches. I realize though that it'll take atleast two years to be able to walk and run normally.

And can someone also confirm that you consolidate without frames when doing LON?

Thanks

It took me about 4 and 1/2 months to lengthen 7.5cm.  Then they waited two weeks after that to take my frames off, so I was in China for 5 months.

Walking with crutches or a cane could take about 3 months after they take your frames off.

So MDOW you left China right after frame removal to consolidate?

And how long personally did it take for you to walk with crutches after you 2nd op?

Cheers

Walking unaided (aside from really short trips like to the bathroom and back) took me about 4 months.  I probably could have done it sooner but I didn't want to take the risk of falling, even if it was a small risk.

"Walking normally" and "walking without aid" are pretty much the same thing in my opinion.  If you aren't walking right, you're at a risk of falling down and should be using at least a cane.

Yes, I left China after frame removal.  It took me about 2 months before I switched from a walker to crutches.
