Unemployment gap limb lengthening
« on: March 25, 2015, 05:06:44 AM »

Hi guys. I would like your opinion.

Is it a bad idea to state the truth when employer ask why you are unemployed during your leg lengthening of 1.5 years(obviously, because you are recovering and cannot walk)? If it is a bad idea, then should just say something like 'europe travelling'? thanks.

Obviously. No one in the outside world cares about your "height issues" (regardless of how much they shove it in your face).

I wouldn't do that either because it implies physical weakness and also possible future issues as well.

Maybe say that you were over weight and also had some bow leg issues so took 1-1.5 years off especially because of delays surgery but everything is sorted out now.

Honestly, i would do some type of work from home deal or be self employed during LL, even if i have to lie about how serious i was about it. That way youll have no gaps in your resume or tax records. No one has to know about the surgery, unless your boss is short he wont understand.

It depends on the type of work you are applying for. If it's short-term work or low level work, then you can say whatever you want and what you do is nobody's business.

But for high position like managerial or positions where ethic and trust involves, you shouldn't come off as a phony and whatever you say must be real. And you'll probably have multiple interviews for this type of position.

People, especially interviewer, are not stupid. If you lied and get caught, you would have lost all your credibility which you only have one chance. The best way to maintain credibility is by telling the truth.

I had medical procedure which was originally planned for 2 months. But due to complications and the doctor weren't as qualified as I had hope, the procedure drag on for over for 6 months. Due to the nature of the medical procedure I don't feel comfortable disclosing at this point but I can provide you some document showing the length of time which I had to stay abroad/hopital until.

Like I said, it depends on the job you are applying for.

Isnt that a lie too? To say that you expect to recover within 2 months when you know it takes at least one year to walk again.

No, it was real. My original plan was to take 2 months off work. I told everyone including my company, friends and relative that I'll be back in 2 months. I even mentioned it on my old diary in the old forum.

But when I was in India, I was peer-pressured (by Crazy 6 and others) and didn't stick to my plan. I should have lengthen 1.5mm for the first 2cm. If I had done this, the gap would be big enough and my bone wouldn't suffered from pre-consolidation. As the result, my bone consolidated prematurely causing one limb to be longer than the other. At 4 months, my left was only 3cm. Luckily, I lengthened 5cm in the 5th month (secretly) and came home in the 6th month.

One week after I came back I went working at my office job using a walker. Regained walking mobility after 4 weeks. So everything I said is true.

My advice for you is if you plan on doing LL, resign from your company. The constant harassment from my company and the threats that my GF was cheating did me more harm than all the LL complication I had. Cheers.

My job requires me to go to client's place so coming to work with walker is just not practical. Thank you for your suggestion. All the best with your career :)

You misunderstood me.

You asked advice for what to say for unemployment gap. I told you to tell the truth. It's ethical, it makes you feel good, and you won't be caught lying.

The 2 months is my story. You ask me if I was lying which I told you I wasn't. You need to use your own story.

Cheers,

i too want to tell the truth honestly. But what about their impression towards me, like this surgery is for insecure people and it is just too personal. Actually you are the first one to say just tell them, everyone around me said dont tell. If i never ask around about this, i would have state the truth because i feel like this is kind of similar to doing other plastic surgery like nose job, nothing embarassing to not disclose because everyone have some issues with their appearances

The key is to structure your answer so that it looks favourably to you and you don't come off as lying. You also have no obligation to disclose personal surgical detail nor reasons for undergoing the procedure.

Jobs where credibility and trust are important, you don't want to be caught lying. Interviewers are also smart. They've interviewed thousands of people and are trained to detect inconsistencies in your statement. Your boss may also not be as dumb either.

Well, I don't know the exact detail of your operation. But you say you're planning on being away for 1 year. I could say something like this.

"The one year gap in my employment was due to the medical procedure I underwent in Europe. I have here the record of the flight tickets showing the dates I was away from the country, along with the receipt of my hotel stay and my returning flight dates."

If they ask, what's the nature of the medical procedure? You can say that it is personal and private in nature and that it won't affect your competency related to this type of work. Under the law, they can't refuse to hire you based on your medical surgery.. just like your race, gender, age, etc. Plus you have already fully recovered, so it no longer has anything related to the work.

Much of the time they only care what you did during this time (undisclosed job, bad break with previous companies) so as long as you provide the answer, they really don't care about your surgery.

So is this a good enough answer?

Maybe. I think it depends on the interviewer. If someone i interviewed say something like this, I will probably wonder what kind of surgery it is, i'd be curious. But maybe not everyone is as nosy as me.

Although it is illegal to discriminate me against others for medical record, but they can always do that without disclosing the reason for not hiring me, since i refused to tell them. That is my worry. I would not know why I'm not hired, they may give me another reason like I'm not good enough, i am afraid of that risk.

When you mentioned lying, are you referring to the 'europe travelling' in my first post before or something else?
And I appreciate your response and suggestion. I will prepare my answer ahead.

Yes, it depends on the interviewer and the type of jobs. What is your job? If it's just a regular job, then you can say whatever you want. I'm referring to CFO, CEO, professionals, accountants, lawyers, analysis, political, consultant, managers etc. If you're not in these fields, then it's alright to say whatever you want.

Often time I read in the times, politicians, news broadcaster and other people who held important position were caught previously lying. For example, Brian Williams resigned from CNN when he was caught exaggerating his statement. And Bill Clinton's lied does him more damaging than his affair itself.

But like I said, it depends on the position itself and it's up to you how to want to structure your story.. if it's a position that requires integrity, ethics and trust, then the worst you can do to yourself is being caught as a lier.

Couldn't you just say that you got into a serious accident while overseas which required extensive hospitalization? I mean they'd ask what it was probably, however, they'd have no way of knowing for sure as your medical records are confidential.

This issue is exactly what makes it hard for me to do round 2. I might have to settle for 2-2.5cm extra and possibly not great proportions. Still need to get Dr R and Dr G's opinion and put some more meet back on my quads/ass.

I'm planning on saying I broke my legs skiing and had to wear frame and have extensive physical therapy. I know that the illizarov frames have been used in those instances so I don't think it'll be too far fetched. My job isn't a career one just one I use to save and support me while I attend school, think that's the best way to go.

I just told employers I had a medical issue. In the US, employers are not allowed to ask for further details.

I mean you can do whatever you want. But a volunteer or internship position sounds better than a medical issue. Medicla issue means weakness.

Depends on what kind of job you are going for. In software I don't think being "weak" matters. If it were a physical labor job, I can understand.

I didn't say medical issue exactly. I think I said 'hospitalization' or 'medical reasons'. I hinted that it had something to do with leg injuries and needing crutches/wheelchairs temporarily. Doesn't necessarily imply weakness.

Of course it matters. Employees want employers who are reliable and are  there not employees who have to take sick days..etc
