Sad news for proportion Nazis :(
« on: March 16, 2015, 12:30:00 PM »

Guys, I just found some relatively upsetting statistics regarding ape index (wingspan/height)

It turns out there was a study done that found the average ratio to be 1.05-1.06 / 1 and the average ape index was ~+9CM

This is upsetting me and crushing my hopes and expectations a bit, especially cause my ratio is only 1.01/1. :(

it doesn't matter il you exceed the average ratio by a little, btw how many centimeters are considering?

Ok, I'm an interesting case. I'm going to try glucosamine and inversion over the summer to attempt to hit 5' 10", in which case I well never worry about my height again.

If it doesn't work, I would consider CLL up to 5' 11", or roughly 5CM

In an overwhelming majority of the subjects (97.8%), the arm span exceeded height by a mean of 9.66 cm and 8.09 cm in male and female subjects respectively

*Gulp*

This seriously stinks

i don't want to sound rude, but you will never grow a whole inch with inversion and glucosamine, the gain may only be permanent that's to say you will lose the gain until you stop practicing  it.
At the very besy you could gain permanently 1 cm.
I have been swimming and stretching for a year, and i just grew 4 millimeters.
you will still be proportionate after 5 cm, don't worry

If your height gains are not too big, people probably won´t notice. I´ve never heard anyone speak about proportions or the wingspan/height ratio in my life so far. Only the people on this forum are really aware of proportions, hardly anyone would take a closer look to this stuff, if you don´t do too much obviously.

That's pretty sad to hear. Though considering I'm around 1.0 naturally I'm pretty sure the variation is big enough that few, if any would notice.

Also, rather be tall with short arms than short with proportionally short arms.

It's weird to see that an ape index of alomst +10 is the average, I always thought that I had long arms :P

You're not going to look weird with a wingspan equal to height or even minus a bit. A lot of people have wingspans just a few cm higher or shorter. Shorter arms are better for strength too. Not sure what the issue is.

I suppose you are right, but a wingspan only slightly below height would still look normal. Rocky Marciano (-3 inch ape index) looked very disproportionate to me

I was just shocked and upset that my ape index ratio wasn't that great.

I don't know of anyone who would outright call someone out for having short arms though. A negative ape index of a few inches is probably not really noticeable in person because nobody really focuses on another's arms in person. It might only get called out in specific situations, like if you're on television or if you're a pro fighter and they measure those stats like arm length to display to the public.

I've worn boots with very high heels, and I'm sure guys who wear lifts don't get called out on all of a sudden having disproportionate short arms because of the enhancement to their height.  I wouldn't worry about it.

It's perfectly logical that a forum full of people with short, stubby legs would also tend to have short, stubby arms. Just can't win in this world.

Thanks for the reference. This is a useful guide to what "normal proportions" look like. My wingspan is 5'10". I'm 5'7.5". This is one piece of evidence which is pushing me towards not lengthening any more than 2.5" total.

I also find I look too lanky when I stand in lifts higher than that. Bone structure is not "thick" enough for the height. Don't want to be come Slenderman. Or T-Rex Slenderman for that matter.

If you are thicker boned/built like KiloKahn for example I think you might be able to push this a bit farther than someone like me. But like most proportion talk, that's just my opinion.

Key figure from the article:

In short, for 90% of men, arm span was between 2 cm and 16.53 cm greater than height. No one out of 287 men was taller than their arm span. Only one man was equal in arm span to his height.

Honestly though I don't think this should really discourage anyone from LL. What would you rather have? Short arms? Or short stature? In an ideal world we wouldn't have to choose. But personally, I'd rather short arms.

odd, again apotheosis was 9cm taller than wingspan yet appeared to look fine.

anyway I am 164, wingspan 167.

but when people wear heels, does that count as having that height, as in can you look at yourself in the mirror and see the same proportions as you would if you had LL.

because if that's so then a lot of women would look really weird in heels as they'd have short arms relative to their height, but in reality they don't look wierd.

That's just numbers, what matters is how you look. If you look good then it's all fine, if you look weird then cut a few CM off your goal.

Myself I'm pretty picky about these things and I'm still certain I could lengthen 7Cm before my arms start to look short. It is also possible to lengthen the humerus which seems somewhat easier than leg lengthening.

The sample for the study in question would not be representative for almost any country. The subjects were North Indian patients with respiratory diseases (average height for males being 163 cm should have been a warning). Quoting the study:

The study has limitations. It was not blinded. The population of the study was divided into two groups after the study was completed. This, however, was not possible before the study as the relationship between (arm span – height) and height was not known. Further, generalization to other ethnic backgrounds may not be done as arm span and height correlations have been shown to be different among different ethnic groups. Similar studies therefore need to be carried out in other populations.

The thing about proportions is:

100% notice your height.
0.1% notice your proportions.
