8 cm typical time for wearing frames? 12 months ?
« on: February 22, 2015, 09:00:14 AM »

Hey guys, whats the typical time to wear the ex-fix for 8 cm tibia?
I started surgery on 8 December, and distracted 4 days after surgery.

My doc says I might be able to remove (based on my X-rays) in December. Is this slow???

Dec = 2 cm
Jan = 2 cm
Feb  = 2 cm
Mar = 2 cm
So I end around end of March/beginning of April.

Consolidation:
April, May, June, July, Oct, Sept, Nov, Dec (8 months)

It boils down to about 1 month per cm for consolidation

That seems realistic. I did 7 cm and it will probably take me 10 months in total (3 and a half months left). One and a half month per cm in total (lengthening + consolidation) seems to be the average. So 4 cm in 6 months, 6 cm in 9 months or 8 cm in 12 months is the average time frame.

There are exceptions of course. Rgkey did 9 cm in 10 months, but then he had a bowed leg...

Did you think of LATN? That could reduce the time wearing the frame extensively.

Yeah! I read a study which said that 1.5 - 2 months per cm is the average rate, so 1.5 shd be on the faster side...
RGkey removed the frame too early causing his bowed leg?
Crimsontide also removed his too early causing bowed leg...
Yeah thought of LATN but permanent knee pain worries, loss of 1 cm, and extra cost, and worst: my clinic doesn't offer LATN though they actually do traumatology IM nailing =(

2 months per cm...so 7 cm in 14 months for example...quiet a long time. I understand why people want to do LATN or LON although there is a risk of permanent knee pain. Looking back, maybe I should have done it too. I think if people go over 6 cm they should strongly consider LON/LATN.

It is hard to say what exactly caused the bowed leg of Rgkey. Maybe the doctors took the frame off too early or maybe the cause was that he did not use the crutches as he should have. I read that he urged the doctors to take off the frame which I can absolutely understand after 10 months with the frames on.

Yes there is definitely a downside to doing LATN. Here in Volgograd they do LATN but I dont know if it is an option for you to come here after lengthening.

Could you ask a doctor there at Volgograd? I am considering IM nailing as an option.I mean I have school in August. I could wear these ex-fix to school but it would be so much better without. And I can live a better life from April - December  (more than a few months). Would be so good to go out in public without the fixators. But I think they are quite comfortable most of the time. Just you cant really meet girls and get them to crush on you cos' you have those metal things there.

Hey ItsMyLife,

Dr. Barinov said that he decides about these questions individually. He has to look at your case and then he would decide if it is possible to do it or not. He asked me if you had any infections. Did you? And he asked if it is possible for you to come here with your latest x-ray for consultation. Would that be an option for you?

Hey bro... that's possible but I've to fly to Volgograd. Yes I have two series of superficial pinsite infections... With slight fever, for one of them. Both infections took pretty long to cure with oral and topical antibiotics. The second infection was present without fever, only tenderness that is very bad. I did my Sx with Dr Bagirov in Moscow. Please help me ask him!

How long is this an option? lets say I finish lengthening in April. How long can I delay my trip to Volgograd? eg, can I insert a nail after 2 months of consolidation..

Because it is expensive to fly back to Russia, could we do an online (Skype) or email consult? I can send him digital copies of my X-ray too.

Also, how does he address the issue of knee pain?

Thanks so much (:

It sounded like he would not like to treat you if you have infections but I am not sure. I will ask again. So right now you have infections or are they cured by now? In my opinion he will not just send you back to Moscow. Dr. Barinov is a very kind doctor. I am sure he will try his best to help you.

You have this option until the frames are off. Here are guys who got the nail in after about one year after stopping lengthening.

I will ask about online consultation and knee pain.

I am happy if I can help:) It is important that you know that everything will be fine. Everything can be fixed! So dont worry too much and come to Russia very soon.
