balance, proprioception loss
« on: April 16, 2019, 04:49:57 PM »

Dear,

I am doing 5 cm LON Tibia. A few weeks after surgery I lost the ability to weightbare on one leg. I feels like I'm gonna collaps completely if I dont put weight on my arms as support. My other leg is perfectly normal. I do a lot of excercices the physiotherapists gave me but I dont feel any change.

I was wondering if there is someone else with the same problem of if someone knows something about this problem.

Kind regards!

I'm already past consolidation, and my weight bearing on one leg is still much worse, I did 5.5cm tibia.

I am doing one-leg pistol squats to strengthen my weak right leg more, but it also feels like it's not progressing. But, it eventually should even out. My advice is to ask the doctor about how even your lengthening is. Even though you may lengthen the same on both legs, small differences in each leg may cause one leg to weight bear more than the other, making it feel weaker. My legs were checked for this, and it turned out my leg was shorter initially. But, for months it was off-balance.

Can you stand on both legs though without holding on to the walker?

Thank you for your reply. In the beginning I had local pain on my right leg, the doctor said to not walk to much which I interpreted in not use the right leg to much. So I didnt weightbare on that leg. I think that is the cause of all this. I do have leg length difference. I'm gonna ask my doctor about this!

I'm now doing squats on one leg a everyday for a few weeks but I dont feel any progress, which really freeks my out.

Thanks again for your very interesting reply, mean a lot.

I did the squats because of this problem. I need the bars for my balance.

My left leg is also stronger than my right leg when it comes to weight bearing. But my right leg was always stronger during PT. So it's not about the muscles I guess.

Maybe it gets better when the frames come off.

I really really hope so!!! Everybody here tells me I have to first stretch my heel till it perfectly touches the ground before I can work on my balance. I try to balance on my toes, normal people can walk on their toes right? So that excludes my calf problem.

I'm not sure if your doctor will recommend it, but I sincerely suggest making the switch from a zimmer walker to forearm crutches. You will build the small muscles you really need to weight bear when walking, and you just don't build them on a zimmer walker. My form and walking ability has literally shot up drastically in the last 2 weeks longer than many months with a walker. I am almost able to walk using only 1 arm crutch as well now.

I'm really thinking about that as well. I feel that I'm not progressing with my walker. Thanks for this!!

I know it is maybe difficult to say but if you really want, are you able to make one step unaided?

Kind regards!

i had sort of same problem. my right leg was very weak and could bare very little weight. but my doctor recommended to walk as much as possible and tho it was difficult and very painful but now after weeks it has improved. The pain is gone but what is left is a little stronger leg. But i stil have my other share of problems.

I am 1 month post op and can walk indoors and sometimes outdoors. I think ur muscles atrophied and u just need to catch up and build strength. do eat protien everyday.
