Leg Lengthening in general
« on: November 21, 2013, 09:21:05 PM »

Dear

Please read the full text so you could help me out.
YES! I'VE DONE ALL MY RESEARCHES!

In order to consume less time on the introduction:

Ethic? I'm originally born in Thailand (I'm an Asian)
What's my gender? Male
How old am I? 18
Where do I currently live? Europe
What's my weight? 52kg (I will try to lose weight before surgery)
What's my height? 157cm (5'2") - I will no longer grow - doctor told me
What's my desired height? 165 cm (on tibias and femus)
So I'm actually going from short to "short", But it will change my life positively.

Story:
As any other short guy you hate being disrespected and discriminated by girls.

Problem:
Next year I'm going to go to the university and study medics (to become a proffesional doctor).
What keeps me away from doing the surgery is "time".
I'll start with just 4-5cm on the tibias:
If my research is correct it would take me 2 months to get rid of the external fixation (LON).
Thus allowing me to do it in the summervacation; I assume I'll be able to walk after 1-2 months independant because of weight. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
But I'll take 3 months to be sure (I'll miss 1 month of school).
Don't worry about the crutches, I'll just say I had bike accident.

So now that is settled the problem is money.
My mother will provide me with 30k euro which is good but not enough for the Eu/Us hospitals.
So I'll go to India to Dr Sarin.

I've heard fake story about him on old forum ; makes me worried.
But then... I've no real options do I? I even see journals 2013 about Dr Sarin.

So should I go to him?

My mother wants me to do it in Thailand 30k; but I assume since Dr Sarin has done more LL he's a better option. I'm so lost, please help me.

Once the lengthening phrase is done I'll go home a,d come back later for removal.
Problem is... Won't the metal detector sensor go on whenever I enter a building?

I'm a strong man; I can endure it.

Thanks for reading.

30K Euros is enough for Beijing.  They're overpriced for what you get (the hospital is a dump), but the doctors have a good reputation and lots of experience if you're worried about Dr. Sarin or an inexperienced Thai doctor.

You'll probably be okay if you plan to do 4cm in 3 months (unless you have complications.)

IM nails are difficult for metal detectors to detect, so don't worry about that.

Hi there
Thanks for the quick reply.

What I didn't mentioned was that not only is my mother my supporter; but also is she my drawbacks. She'd never allow me to go to China. She already hates the idea of india.
She simply prefer Thailand because of the communication and it's an world class hospital.
My mother suggest me in my own country but that's not an option and if I'd go to Germany it'll be 60k and I can't do that to my mother.

I think you'll be fine with Dr Sarin if you do 5cm.

Don't go to Thailand. There hasn't been any successful LL-story from there, only the opposite.

It can take more than 3 months so don't be on a definitive time frame. Everyone who did that ended up with serious complications.
Let the procedure take the time it needs. Maybe you can't lengthen more than 0,5mm/day. You don't know until you've started. Everything can happen, it's a very serious procedure.

Go to India, save money, try to do 5,5cm and then later some day do 6cm on femurs making you ~169cm tall. With shoes you'll be over 170. Okey height for a doctor.

You could be a LL-specialist and open a clinic where you offer LL for $10.000 :)

Hi Sweden
I've been reading your stories here and on old forum .

About DrSarin, 5cm will do... But what if he messes up and cut off my achilles tendon or damage my nerves (stories I've read)?

My real dreamheight is 170cm; but I'm scared that it'll messes up my proportions.

I might do 2x5cm so I'll be 167; but I won't try higher than 5cm on a bone because of the problems I've read.

Oh a new question pops up in my head:
Is ballerina foot curable? Many patients seems to suffer from it but I've never read a treatment before.
Or will it go away eventually?

You aren't planning to lengthen much, so you shouldn't worry about it.  You might get mild ballerina foot which will go away if you just keep walking a lot.

Believe me,
Only 5cm for the first surgery is not worth it. Go for 7cm on internal femurs, and with 30k euro you can do it with dr. Jamal in Kiev.

Don't make up own stories. He has never cut off an Achilles' tendon.
You can get nerve damage from any doctor.

And 5cm IS worth it - trust me.

Hi Doflamingo,

Check out this hospital: http://www.limblengtheningforum.com/index.php?topic=139.0

I got a very sensible response from them and their hospital looks good. They are located in Bangkok. From what they say, Dr. Tardthong has performed a lot of lengthenings on Thais and foreigners. I think it's worth having a consultation with the doctor to see if you think he's good. Dr. Sarin may have done a lot of surgeries, but he's also had some serious complaints. That would be something to consider.

I would strongly recommend NOT going with Dr Sarin. Nearly all the people that work for Sringari now used to work for Sarin and they all agree he is a careless alcoholic. Ballerina also seems to be much less of a problem in the Sringari guesthouse. I think the reason for this is we stand daily and wear our sandals TIGHT unlike the Sarin patients. If you can afford doing internal with Jamal I would do that, externals are a bitch!

If my mom doesn't allow me any other then that's the choice.  Thanks for your concern :).

Do your research carefully, as if your mom didn't exist.  Then tell your mother the exact reasons why you chose that doctor.  And explain why you didn't chose the other doctors.  Present your case and she may surprise you and support your decision.  (Your mom probably knows very little about LL and may think any specialist can do it reasonably.)  You're mom is concerned and I presume only wants the safest, best outcome for you - which is exactly what you want.

If you need to save more money and wait years in order to afford a doctor you feel comfortable with, then I recommend you do so.  Everyone on these forums wants to get it ASAP for obvious reasons.  Some will go to whomever they can afford now.  Some will wait years in order to afford a doctor they feel comfortable with.  Whatever is the best decision for you.

My advice is not to pick a doctor based on your mom's approval (yes, I understand it's her money) and then regret it if your legs get f'd up.  You both will regret it big time.  Big time.

(I went to a local collage because my mom insisted I stay nearby, and lost out on going to a lot of fantastic out-of-state colleges I could have easily gotten into, and exposed to a diverse group of people and experiences.  I regret the potentially great opportunities I missed out on, and now she regrets it too.  Oh well.  But that's not what you'll be saying if your legs get f'd up.  And it will cost you more money in the long-run.)

The sandals are just normal sandals with two long straps on either side of the foot on either side of the toes that are tied around the Ilizarov frame to pull your achilles tight ie: your toes towards your body. I had some minor issues that prevented me from doing my standing until recently, yet I am almost positive I will have no ballerina at all as long as I continue diligent use of the sandals. My roommate encouraged me to wear them so tight that you can only bear it for 30 minutes to a couple of hours, then rest and repeat. Doing this is essentially like having 24 hr physio and is excellent advice. He is at 7cm+ now and his heels come down easily when standing. It isn't enough to have physio for 30 mins and stand for 30 mins then just let your feet hang the other 23 hours. If I had to evaluate the benefit of standing and sandals on achilles flexibility the sandals would be a no brainer. Funnily enough every couple of days I am making tighter and tighter holes in my sandals, my achilles/calf is actually getting more and more flexible rather than the other way round  :o. Whenever I read of the patients struggling with ballerina months and months after frame removal, I can't help but think they slacked off while lengthening unless they are old/bad genetics.

I don't think you can use the same type of sandals Dis as the straps are tied around the Ilizarov rings. However, there are splints that do the exact same thing and I would definitely inquire about this to your doctor. A quick google search revealed some splints that you can purchase for only 2500 rupees. If you do think one would be beneficial try and get an adjustable one.

I was thinking of Marseille.

Marseilles is way out of your price range.  The HLN nail is from a medical device company in Belgium but I'm not aware of any CLL doctors there.  Prices would be comparable with the rest of western Europe if there is a doctor who does it there, though.

I have a question:
I've read that if you do internals only you could "walk" soon after OP. (For ex Guichets)
But If you do LON and if the externals has been removed you can't walk.
Why? Is it simply because the rod of the LON isn't strong enough?

Quite the opposite.  The solid rods in LON/LATN are stronger and smaller than an internal telescoping/hydraulic lengthening rod.  It's not that you can't walk, it's that you're usually instructed not to.

Guichet stresses the importance of physical activity, but not every clinic does it that way.  Some prefer you to take it easy to prevent complications.  Guichet is such a great surgeon with such a great device that complications from physical activity aren't very likely.

So LON rod is stronger than Guichet rod; yet. Dr Guichets let you do "big" physical activities right after surgery while LON mostly they say no walking for a certain amount of time...
If LON is stronger does this means you could "walk" faster than with Guichets?

You can walk on any weight-bearing rod immediately, whether that's a good idea or not is another story.

I think that's a really good idea. That one looks comfortable and adjustable so it should be perfect. Honestly one night I slept without sandals and the physio noticed straight away my Achilles was tight, I can't imagine doing 3 months just letting your foot hang. Currently both feet are past 90 degrees, right foot is 100++. I've lengthened 3.5cm so far, you're racing ahead of me  ;).

I got Tibias lengthening 8.5cm micro-wound in China with Dr. Ruin
I never experience pain.
I never had problems with my Achilles, tendons, knees or bones.  I think it went pretty well because i Exercise everyday. :)

One surgery

Removal doesn’t require surgery and it’s painless.

No complications

Good environment

Sweet nurses

Dr. available daily

The 8th Hospital
The Web site describes a micro-wound operation for leg lengthening. This procedure uses a a fixative clip instead of a Ilizarov fixator. The fixator clip covers just one side of the leg and appears to be more comfortable that an Ilizarov fixator which surrounds the leg. The total cost is about $US 8,000.

The $8,000 price is from a few years back. Most recently the clinic that offers microwound has been quoting $35,000.

I would never vouch for ANY doctor because I think most doctors are greedy and I don’t want any responsibilities other than I would recommend this procedure with Dr. Ruin or Dr. Bai. Base on my experience. They seem to have integrity. If I had to do it all over again I would go back to Chongqing China for tibia lengthening. I’m sorry I won’t write a diary because English is my second language.  :)
