Keeping knees straight when lying down hurts? Only on one leg?
« on: December 19, 2014, 03:15:51 AM »

ve difficulty keeping my leg straight (ie, my knees totally straight out) when lying in bed

doc says must do this to avoid knee contracture? the forum seems to have NO CASE of knee contracture though doc says is common?

i get intense pains at the lateral aspect of my left leg when i do that

muscle pain probably from stretching??

what is this pain all about and who has it? either now, or before, when you had LL

Yeah, that's why I kept my knees bent most of the time.  You can recover from it later.

Did u recover from it eventually? is it due to muscle stretching?

Yes, I recovered from it.  And yes, it's due to your muscles and tendons not keeping up with the lengthening of the bones.

No, I'm not Asian.  Not sure why that matters though.

Yeah, once you stop lengthening and start walking, your legs will catch up and it'll be fine.  Contracture is temporary and nothing to worry about.  People spend months in agony keeping their knees straight to avoid something that goes away on its own.

Your recovery will just take a little longer, that's all.  For me that was an acceptable tradeoff.

so when your knees contract, it is painful to walk? I mean, when you walk you have straight legs ...

You can walk with bent knees.

Yep, then gradually it goes away as you walk more.

that is like saying don't worry about ballerina because it will resolve on its own eventually.

do it the right way. keep your legs straight.

knee bend and ballerina go hand in hand.

I mean, if you can prevent it, why not ;)

It's a trade-off up to the individual.  Slower recovery vs. worse discomfort during the lengthening phase.  I made my choice and lived with the consequences.
