You should be able to walk during the lengthening phase, as external devices are all fully weight-bearing.  So, you should always be able to walk during LON/LATN, except maybe for two weeks after each surgery.

The N in LON stands for Nails.  So yes, you do have them in your tibiae or femurs if you do LON.

LON is not the same as Ilizarov.  You can have external-only Ilizarov without doing LON, or you can get LON with a different type of device such as monorails or TSF.

You'll probably need about 3 months in fixators to lengthen 5cm, but this will vary based on how much you lengthen per day.

The time you need the nail inside you can vary significantly based on how fast your bone regenerates.  I had the rods removed about a year after I got my frames off, but some people spend 2-3 years with the rods in and still aren't fully healed.

Yeah. It's usually a year with the rods in your legs. 2-3 years isn't usually the case.

I read that lengthening over nail reduces the consolidation time by about half against the purely external Illizarov frames, so about 3-5 months sounds reasonable.

Of course, the nail will have to be in you for at least a year.
