Considering leg lengthening
« on: December 06, 2014, 12:28:16 PM »

Greetings,

I am a 22 year old Swedish male with a severe height complex. My father is comfortably tall at 6'3, but I failed to sprout. It is possible that I might hit another growth spurt (my father grew 2 inches at 25), though I am preparing for the worst case scenario. Currently I stand 178-179 cm (5'10-5'10.5) tall--depending on the time of the day and who does the measuring. Not far from average, I know, but I can't stand the thought of being shorter than most men around me.

People tell me I have "long arms" and "wide shoulders" (an inheritance from my father). I would suspect that my wingspan is at least 7.5 cm (3") greater than my height (I wonder why I haven't simply measured it yet)--is this a pro for a leg lengthening patient? As my arms are too long already a greater height might actually make me more proportional, I figure.

Anyhow, I won't go for anything unrealistic (6'3), but probably for a height that is sort of "tall" yet in no way significantly taller than average. Thus I came to the conclusion that I should aim for 6'1/6'1.5--a 3 inch increase.

What I would like to know is, could I do 1.5 inches on the femurs and 1.5 inches on the tibias? The two are already well-proportioned, and perhaps a conservative lengthening of both bones would facilitate convalescence? Or is it the other way around (easier to recover from a 3 inch lengthening of one of the bones)?

I am blessed with a wealthy family, so I already have the monetary means necessary to go through with this under the care of the best surgeon available. However, since my father did have a late mid-20s growth spurt, I thought that I should perhaps wait until I am 25 before I go through with this harsh procedure.

One of my favourite pastimes is running--I am not that good, but I very much enjoy it. Do you think I will experience a noticeable permanent decline in my running ability if I have a 3" LL?

Thank you in advance for responding to my inquiries,

Karl

Hi Pal
I'm asian 177.5 cm > I also want to  do LL in 2 segment Femur 5.5 cm and tibia 5 cm then i will end up with 188 cm with conseravative ll's ratio.
Go to Paley or Guichet since you can afford them.I will have consultation with these 2 doctors in min January.
But If he advice 8 cm only femur may be i will accept it.If you are 178+8 = 186 cm on femur is it ok for you?or you do 178+5.5+5=188.5 i think that is respected height .

Realistically speaking you will do only one surgery, so choose either 6cm tibia or 6+cm femur, which one you choose is not important. All you other concerns should't worry you too much. Proportions are not important and you will be running just fine when your bone is fully consolidated, which can take up to 2 years.

My tip is to do 6cm, method not important, because if you do more than that your bone will need a lot more time to form a good bone bridge which allows you to walk normally. And I think you will be more than happy with 184-185cm.

I did 6cm external tibias and it took/takes me around 300 days to just walk normally without external frames, so you need to sacrifice around a year for this "dream" and do it with a good doctor or you may be cripple for the rest of your life.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Hello Karl,

My advice to you is clearly: don't do it. At your height there is no reason for LL. Instead do something useful with your time and money. If you do LL you will regret it later.

300 days=10 months

just to walk normally means that I can't do any sorts of jumps or running or whatever else.

Hey another swede that makes what -4--5 of us? We're the same height you and me if you want maybe we could do the surgery together? Though I don't plan to do until at least a year from now.

I know the feeling anyway, dad is 187CM and he's the only one under 190CM in my extended family so I feel pretty tiny. The worst thing is my mates though they mostly range from 183-193CM I only know three people my height and three shorter.

People like these guys are exactly why I'm not as excited as I used to be to do a diary on here. I would love to see how LL doesn't help them, because they are NOT SHORT. Sigh...

wouldn't 10cm make your proportions weird? especially being asian im assuming you have short arms. are you getting arm lengthening too? why not get to 6 foot 1 instead?

None of you guys are short it is not worth it for any of you. The averages are accurate and you guys feel shorter than you actually are because you only look at the tall people in your surroundings.

Lol at these Swedish dudes whom are 3-4 inches taller than me yet feel short  ;D

I'm not dissing you, it just feels kind of funny.

Anyways, try doing 4 cm a segment. That way you can hit around 6'1.5-6'2 with both segments recovering well. I'm guessing 6'2 would be the Scandinavian equivalent of 6'0?

I heard doing 3-4 cms has a significant less amount of time spent and time to recover is this true? I would only do this few on LON or Ilizarov though.

Yes, that's true. Anything under 5 cm has a pretty short recovery time. With 5-7.5 cm, recovery time increases significantly, and it even gets worse past 8 cm or so.

That's why I'm considering doing 4 or 4 on both segments. Would put me at the godlike stature of just over 6'4" and recovery time will be short.

Yes us swedes are overrepresented on this forum I couldn't tell you why. We're not quite that tall really 188CM is taller than most even in stockholm or malmö but people arund 185 are the norm rather than the exception so you can understand us poor 5'10 guys feeling a bit ...well tiny.

i think that men at your height or a bit lower that wants to do CLL have some serious problems. If I was a doctor I woudlnt operate on people like that.
