preparing for tibia lengthening
« on: October 29, 2014, 10:08:25 AM »

hi,

is it good to do stretching exercsies? dr bagirov suggested doing so

would it help to strengthen the calf and ligaments? cos I read somewhere that strengthening the calf muscle may make process more painful?

eg plyometrics

has anyone took glucosamine before surgery?

In my opinion physical preparation for LL is not worth it, you need to do physio while lengthening, that's far more important. I would suggest to prepare mentally because that's the hard part of LL and just enjoy your legs while you can, run and jog as much as you can because you won't be able to do that for more than a year after LL.

If a knowledgeable and qualified doctor, like Dr. Bagirov, suggests something  to you, given your circumstances, then it's generally beneficial to follow their advice.  ::)

I talked to some orthopedics (unlike yourself) and they suggested otherwise, but different doctors, different opinions I guess  ::)

According to my doctor, stretching before LL is not going to help much. My guess that maybe it does but only to a small extent that it's probably not worth the time and effort.

Hi, stretching for preparation is always good for muscles and tendons.

Some exercices:

- Stand straight, try to reach the floor/toes with the hands

- When lying on the back: try to put the feet back as much as you can (dorsiflexion)

- Put the feet on a book and try to put your weight on the heel.

Training the arm muscles is also good, because arm strength is beneficial while walking with crutches.

If I always wear shoe lifts, is it good or bad for tibia surgery?
Dorsiflexion means bend my feet and bring my  toes as far as possible closer to my head??

Would glucosamine 1500 mg, multi-vitamins, vitamin C 1000mg and calcium supplements help?
What about bromelain? It reduces swelling after surgery, but might cause blood to have difficulty clotting.
After all we want to prevent embolism.

Yes, dorsiflexion meens that. Here a good Picture/Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anatomical_terms_of_motion#mediaviewer/File:Dorsiplantar.jpg

I think lifts generally arent a good thing for feet, cause they fix the feet in a unatural position. (will depend on the time wearing the lifts)

Supplement are good, but  I think good nutrition is more important (fruits for Vitamins, Bromelain in Ananas, Milk products for calcium)
