lose 1cm after surgery
« on: October 10, 2014, 12:41:49 PM »

Hello. I have read in C12 diary with Dr xia in old forum .page 3. that you lose 1cm of height right after the surgery. Is this true? If this is true we should length one cm more than expected.

that you lose 1cm of height right after the surgery
Do you mean straight after the initial LL surgery or after distraction has finished?

It is true that with internal femur lengthening or lengthening along the anatomical axis, a person will lose about 0.5-1cm from the actual distraction (e.g. a person lengthens 7cm but final height gain will be 6-6.5cm). This is because of the oblique alignment of the femurs.

Callus subsidence of few mm is possible after external frame removal and therefore doctors usually advice to lengthen 0.5mm more than the target. This is avoided with LON and LATN because of the locked nails.

After the first surgery
Under normal circumstances, I highly doubt it.
On the contrary, I actually gained about 3-5mm from the osteotomy.

I actually was the one who asked KirP1 this after I had read that particular diary.  I didn't think that made sense unless it was for other reasons like being in bed for a week. My X-rays I am sure are showing more than the amount I have lengthened because of the initial length I got.

This is very normal with externals. Sweden lost a cm after his surgery, too--from 180 to 179 cm.
