Should I do the op?
« on: September 19, 2014, 05:42:33 PM »

Background: 13 months ago I was in a push bike accident where I fell 3 meters down a storm drain and ended up breaking my femur. There was a delayed union which was unexpected considering my age and previous fitness. Anyways because of the delayed union they were going to remove the screws and plates and put a rod in which was in July. However once they opened me up they noticed my bone had healed.
Now they have realised there is a leg length discrepancy of 3cm and have suggested surgery. However I'm in two minds whether to do it. First it would mean another year on crutches, also because it took so long for my bone to heal it may not grow again or take longer. However I don't want to start my life and then be put on hold again.

Does anyone have any advice or experience of femur lengthening.

Thanks

Hi Annie

First of all they might check of bone has consolidated by performing a CT scan And a gammagraphy. This is a very important Point. Another important advice is to check if there is any axial deformity on the bone by performing a telemetry And a lateral view of your femur.

Of everything is ok, my advice would be to perform femoral lengthenning using either LON or intramedullary distraction. The procedure might take less using internal distraction as you can start knee rehab And walking with partial weight bearing straight away after surgery. I do not think it will take mire than 6-7 months to be able to full load on your limb.
You are very young And it to compensate LLD in your case is a must to prevent future low back pain And hip And/or knee issues.

Best regards
