LON vs pure external for tibia above 7 cm
« on: April 20, 2024, 10:37:35 AM »

So, I'm going to overlengthen my tibia for about 7-7.5 cm. LON costs twice as much compared with pure external where I'm going to get the surgery done. Lengthening 3 inches on tibia might take 4-5 months and consolidation yet another 8 months or so. That means a total of 12-15 months being in external frames while with LON I'll get rid of the fixators in 4-5 months.

My main concern is bone stability with pure externals after lengthening 3 inches. I remember RGKEY's case where he did pure external and got bent bones due to instability being without internal nails.

Is it important to get the nail for additional fixation if one goes above 7 cm on tibia? Or can I avoid bent bones with pure external somehow?
