Working out before going for LL
« on: August 24, 2014, 04:54:37 PM »

Hi, so I want to do LL, I already decided on it, going for 5cms I think, probably externals...but I can't go for it right now, I'm thinking about late 2015 early 2016 due do work/study.

Anyway, is there any point in keeping working out before going for LL? I'm not super muscular and I don't care that much about it either but it's always a plus, but I've heard many people that do LL end up losing a lot of weight, so it seems like I would lose all muscle I gained?
OTOH, I've read some doctors(guichet) actually encourage you to work out your legs before LL to give more support to the bones.
I'm also a bit afraid of getting too heavy, I'm skinny but I'm around 170lbs (78kgs), I'm not tall(around 5'10'', yeah I know some would say I'm already too tall but lets not digress) but I have long armspan and feet/hands/head so I'm somewhat heavy because of that and I'm concerned about weight bearing, but I'm sure heavier people did it before?

I wanted to keep working out and eating well during the LL, the upper body that is, and walking/bike for the lower legs.

Any help appreciated.

You'll waste time and lose all of your weight in one month.

Guichet has his patients keep on exercising all through their LL.  This is possible because of the strong internal nails he uses.  With externals it's harder to exercise and maintain your fitness.

Definitely work out your upper body because you'll be using those muscles a lot to help you get around.

In my personal experience, I lost a lot of leg muscle but the upper body stayed about the same.

thanks, is it possible to exercise at xia's? do u guys have a gym there or something? I don't need anything fancy, only light weight for legs and maybe bench press and others for upper body.

I would like to do with guichet but he seems way too expensive plus he seems to favor femurs too much, I have a bit of lordosis naturally and wouldn't want to do femurs because it would make it worse(duck ass), not to mention I think tibias look more natural, although I know femurs heal faster and are only one bone instead of the combination of tibia/fibula.

How is that? What exercises you can perform with internals that you can't perform with externals?

You don't need to work out for that, unless you decide to use 100 pound crutches. I weight nothing and I'm weaker than a 10 years old girl, yet I can move around just fine for hours even if I want. If anything, smaller muscle mass gives you more endurance.

Working out muscles don't necessarily mean bigger muscles, you can train for endurance, just don't eat as much. Also it's easier the lighter you are, I'm naturally somewhat heavy.

Anyway, I'm just working out 3 times a week, eating well, nothing crazy. I don't care if I lose weight, I just wish I didn't cuz it obviously looks better when you have some muscle mass.

Yes, it was possible to exercise at Guang Ji Hospital.  They had a gym, although nobody used it very often because we were all too tired.  I'm not sure if the new hospital has a gym or not.

Personally maintaining fitness during LL doesnt seem like a good idea to me, i was always under the impression that the body burns more calories during LL to heal bones, and uses up the protein as the main source. If you want to maintain muscle mass, then you would have to eat a lot more to keep the both the bone regen and muscle regen at maximum effectiveness.

Im not sure if the body can maintain the same healing pace of the bone even with increased protein intake, if you decide to train your upper body during LL. Im no doctor but i would assume there is a limit to how much the body can recover every day.

I agree with wannabegiant, why not take just one step at time?

Considering Guichet keeps his patients working out he must be into something...Moreover im not talking about bulking up, only avoid muscle atrophy and not looking emaciated. I believe a decent amount of exercise would actually help healing given the increased hormones and would also help boredom and give u more hunger so u eat more the boring hospital food

I thought the same thing before LL too, but once those frames were on my legs I just didn't have the energy to do it.
