I think it better to do leg lengthening in two stage
« on: September 18, 2014, 09:35:16 PM »

Hi, what do you think about this?
I am thinking it would be better to do first one leg and then in 2 or 3 months the other leg. You can have one healthy leg to help in
posoperatory, and to do the day more easy.
Cheers, Paco.

the total time before you are done with LL and can start to live like normal would be significantly increased, so i dont see why anybody would do it that way.  :(

Also the leg length discrepancy would be hard to deal with even if it is temporary.

It is possible and I can see the advantage of having one healthy leg during LL. But the main and obvious disadvantage will be the large discrepancy between both legs. This would mean that the second LL surgery will be compulsory on the other leg. Maybe you may not want to undergo a second surgery, then you will have a lifelong problem!

There's no point to this.  Especially if your distraction method allows you to weight bear (which most do).

Doubling the LL time from start to finish, doubling PT sessions, just really no benefit to this.

You can see in the page of Willian Dean Terrel, a lof patients with one ilizarov in one leg and the other healthy leg making a easy life,
easy posoperatory. The pain will be smaller with one broken leg that with two. For example if you do 5,5 in one leg, with shoes your heigh will be 2 cm more, then in the healthy you can wear one shoes with insoles in total 7,5 cm. The discrepancy is correct.

Hi to all participants.

Doing first one leg And after the other os a matter of safety. This is extremely important when doing LL with internal devices (LON or intramedullary bone distractors). Reason is multiple

1- fat embolism syndrome. Life might be at high risk.
2- Long surgical timing which raises surgical risk (infection, DVP, anaesthesia)
3- what would you do if one leg goes infected? You have to remove both implants And put 2 ex fix devices. You probably won t be happy!

On top of that life quality And recovery during distraction is by fat much much better.
Bilateral lengthenning is only appliable when doing strictly ex fix procedures.

I know that to create a temporary Limb lenght discrepancy concierna mostrar of the patients. But this can be easily compensated. It s not a matter of time. You patients must understand what is going on when performing such procedures.
My advice would be not to perform bilateral simoultaneous procedures.

Best regards to all
