LON Tibia Recovery time
« on: December 05, 2021, 12:11:26 AM »

I am planning to lenghten my Tibias ~5cm with the LON method during summer break 2022. My plan is to stay in Turkey or Greece for the entire lenghtning phase plus a month or so during the consolidation period. I have 3-4 months of complete free time during the summer break before classes at campus starts again.

My questions:
Is it reasonable to assume that after 4 months of surgery to be able to attend classes? I.e being able to walk and perform normal everyday tasks such as taking the stairs up/down etc (with crutches?)
When can I expect to be able to walk completely normal after 5cm of lenghtning? After full consolidation and internal nail removal?

I know the questions are highly subjective and depend greatly on the indivudals recovery. But I'd like to hear from your personal experience so I can somewhat get an idea of how screwed I temporarily will be when I return to my real life.

Hi. I haven't done LL yet. I am only writing to tell that I am just cancelling all plans for one year because so many things can happen. Starting from 4,5 cm/ 5 cm in tibias for example may require exra physiotherapy or extra tendon lenghtening. LL is no time to rush. Save your peace of mind.
People who have already done LL of course know better, specially those that did LON but also those that did full weight bearing nail (apparently the most "practical" in your case). But after Stryde recall I suppose only Guichet's G-Nail is available and very expensive.

You can generally count on about 1-1.5 months of combined lengthening and recovery for every 1 cm lengthened.

Is it 1-1.5months per centimeter lenghtened as soon as you start lengthening or after you finished lengthening?

It's as soon as you start lengthening; so, for example, 5 cm would take 5-7.5 months before you're ready to resume vigorous physical activity.

Damn that's faster than I thought, I thought it would take atleast one year for the callus to fully harden and consolidate. Maybe my goals are realistic then!

No problem, but I would also heavily recommend looking at people's diaries just to get a better perspective. Your recovery could be a little faster--or much slower if you have a complication--depending on age, genetics, nutrition, etc. My biggest piece of advice (granted, I haven't had the surgery yet) is not to push it too much; if you're lengthening and your doctor advises you stop, then you should stop.
