I would like to share my experiences with removal of the Precice nails recently.
I had underwent 7.5cm lengthening both femurs and 5.5cm lengthening both tibias successfully by Dr Sarbjit Singh in Singapore (pls refer to the link below) about two years ago. Had anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction of left knee done for a soccer injury several years earlier.
The removal of four Precice nails and screws was a semi-major procedure. It took Dr Sarbjit three hours to remove all the nails and screws (pls refer to the link below). Post-surgery, I did not feel much pain and was able to walk with crutches the following the day. As a precaution, my parents insisted I use a wheelchair when out of home.
Knees and ankle movements were commenced almost immediately. The surgery did not affect my joints motion. The stitches were removed 14 days later and I had the same incisions were used mostly. There was not much pain at my recovery stage.
After a month, Dr Sarbjit did X-rays of the femurs and tibias as a check and they were fine. I was allowed to walk normally without support. He told me I could return to light sports in three months and strenuous sports in six months.
Subjectively, I feel the rods removal made me feel lighter and more natural. I think it is preferable to remove all the implants and not wait too long. My removal of nails surgery was delayed due to my studies. My surgeon explained that excessive bony overgrowth can make the removal of the implants more difficult.
I am fine now and delighted at my new height. Started off with 165cm and now 178cm. It has been a long and challenging journey but worth it in the end and it lasts forever!
Below is the link of my scanogram and picture of the implants which has been removed:
