MMA fighters breaking their legs
« on: May 25, 2021, 10:46:02 PM »

Have you guys seen the fighters throw a leg kick, the opponent blocks, it breaks and they just fall over screaming. Obviously the pain must be pretty intense, but how do you guys think their recovery will be? Could it have similarties to LL surgery?

In terms of recovery, even though those MMA injuries can be quite gruesome, LL recovery will always be much tougher. The reason is that when an MMA fighter breaks their tibia for example (like Chris Weidman did recently), they usually undergo surgery to get a rod to stabilise the bone and break, much like we do with LL. However, their bones and legs are never extended and therefore, they only need to heal from the bone break. We need to heal from the bone break, lengthening our bones and soft tissue past natural limits and also generate much more bone to fill the gap then what is required for a regular fracture. LL recovery is tough because its long, painful and essentially forces you to learn how to walk again. MMA injuries are more gruesome when they happen, but recovery would generally be much, much easier.

Do they ever recover or is it pretty much a career killer?

*And do they recover better than one would after LL surgery?

Just breaking a bone has almost nothing in common with breaking that bone amd stretching soft tissues for 5-8 cm.
The risks and longterm consequences of LL is not from breaking the bone but from lengthening it together with all the soft tissued that surround it.

Anderson Silva was never same after that. But then again, the incident happened when he was 38 where a decrease was to be expected regardless of the leg break. And Weidman, it seems that he's been losing fights since 2015 so let's see if he can get back to his prime again and win fights, then that would mean that the leg break didn't really take anything from him.

Either way, what happened to them isn't really comparable to what will happen to LLers. As someone else has said, the risks of LL have more to do with the stretching of the soft tissues.

However, we see in soccer all the time. Players were never the same again after some relatively minor knee/ankle surgeries even without such gruesome leg breaks.

In short, my conclusion is generally speaking, MMA leg breaks will affect the athletic performance to an en extent, but not as much as CLL surgeries.
