Any diabetics with limb lengthening experience?
« on: February 10, 2021, 06:52:47 PM »

As the title says.

I was diagnosed back in September last year with Type 2 diabetes but have since lost an incredible amount of weight and made significant lifestyle changes as well as bringing down my blood glucose to normal levels in a relatively short space of time. I will have my HBA1C checked soon. I have asked the opinions of a couple of surgeons who have said that diabetes isn't necessarily a bar to having the surgery and/or indeed a hamper to the process in terms of lengthening etc. so long as the diabetes is well under control. This of course is my focus in the weeks and months ahead before I can even contemplate going under the knife for surgery.

The question I have though is if there are any of you out there who might be diabetic and whether or not you have had LL surgery and what have your experiences been? I am looking at either doing my surgery with Betzbone or a similar nail on the femurs, and either the same for tibias or possibly LON in order to keep the costs down.

However, I am thinking using a device such as Betzbone minimises the overall risk? But I am told LON is ideal for tibias? I am concerned that LON given there is still an external nail or two piercing the skin, it could make me even higher risk of infection with diabetes? Note: the enquiries I have made regarding the diabetes risk were NOT related to LON as I have only become familiar with the latter procedure quite recently.

In every advanced diabetic stage the main "externally visible" damages concern, other than eyes, feet ad the lower leg overall. For sure, if you are young and at a starting stage of the disease your health should be fine enough to tollerate this surgery. I've seen many people with distal necrosis and cronic wounds even 40yrs old but, I tell you, it's very individual and expecially related to how much time have you lived with the disease.
Small vessels are the problem, so I would be a bit against any form of external lenghtening. Poor healing and higher risk of infection is real, so I don't really know if having screws though the skin (especially in the leg) for months is worth it. Osteomyelitis can last years. If I were you I sincerely would consider internals only, I don't know if there are cases described in some works.
I suggest you to take a consultation, you could find conflicting opinions

well, you should talk to your doctor. personally, it seems like a bad idea. you will be pumped with pain blockers - the only way to somehow endure the pain. Pain blockers have a big impact on your liver and kidneys. So really talk to someone that knows what
type of pain blockers are safe to use for you. imo dont risk anything. its not worth trading life for a "standard" imposed by irrational women.  :-X

Lose weight before LL anyways. Lose weight in general to be more healthy so you live longer and so a nail won't bend or break

That being said, I have seen plenty of obese patients going to Dr. Mahboubian lol. Probably one mordbidly obese. They probably do fine. Not ideal, but probably fine. Makes life probably 10x harder though.

Type 2 diabetes isn't much more than being a glutton and obese. That's pretty much the reality. (T1D is different, yes I know lol) I'm sure you'll be a candidate for LL, with or without the weight loss. Obviously lighter is better.
