Testosterone during the process?
« on: November 01, 2020, 07:53:09 AM »

It is well known that if you follow any of the non weight bearing methods (eg precice and also the original ilizarov if I am correct) muscle atrophy will occur as would be expected

I am not sure if this happens with TSF and Stryde also, since you would not be walking all the time

How come then no doctor prescribes testosterone to maintain muscle mass? If it works for people with cancer who suffer serious muscle wasting, I d expect it would work for us as well.

There are 2 theories I have:
1. They are afraid of side effects, but I thibk this is bull, if professional BBers can get away injecting grams every week, then under the supervision of an andrologist and for limited time use (eg till 1 year post op) it should be safe
2. Perhaps it seriously accelerates bone growth. But this also doesn't make sense cause then it would be panacea for non unions

In general, I can only see benefit by using testosterone for LL yet never have I read a diary where the doctor recommended it

What do you guys think?

I was suggested to use nandrolone during my consolidation by Dr Pili. Even Catagni suggests it. I injection per week then 1 per 2 weeks later on. I would say it did help although my consolidation was anyway decent- better than my batchmates. I was 16 months in frames for 9+cm.

I think it has too many side effects compared to the benefits. Its use is probably limited to some patients only.
Vit D and Calcium (with a protein diet) is surely a huge boost for everybody, with minimal side effects.

Ilizarov is weight bearing.  Anyway, the reason why they don't do it is because you can exercise your muscles without weight bearing, and even if you don't do that during LL the muscle wasting is very mild.  No need for treatment.

But if you have a big caloric deficit (you are supposed to eat 6000 calories afaik which I'd assume most people can't do) probably big part of the weight you will start losing will be muscle, no?

What about femurs? Can you also exercise femurs without weight bearing?

side effect i would say a bit of hairloss/weight gain on your face(puffiness)...both of which are temporary. I could confirm about the hairloss bit, but for the puffiness I cannot say much coz I also started to work out(,upper body). Not sure what helped me with that.

speaking of which, if you read my diary- i used to walk for an hour ish every day 2-3 weeks post op. Everday till frame removal. So, I think that too helped me with it. My mobility on crutches was perfect all times(except 2 weeks after surgery, and for 3 weeks after ATL).

Perhpas why i consolidated faster.

But as a suggestion, keep your stretching excercises too in routine. Its something i plan to keep in mind while i do my femurs, which I had not done for my tibias.

I don't think you would need that many calories.  Your bones and soft tissues can only grow a little bit per day no matter how much you eat and exercise.  I had a lot of inflammation and mobility issues in my knees the whole time so I lay in bed most of the day and exercised very little.  I ate about 2500 caloires a day.  After five months of living like that I had only lost 10-15 pounds, and it was very easy to gain it back after resuming even light activities.

Weight bearing stimulates bone growth and makes stretching easier since you're getting help from your body weight rather than having to force 100% of it.  But you can exercise and stretch any muscle without weight bearing.  The non-weight bearing Precise nail got (and continues to get) excellent results.

Aas is a big no during LL because they need a proper rehabilitation otherwise they will lead in bigger muscle deficit thsn even without taking them.
And having so many substances together with other medicines for LL (analgetics, antithrombotic injections etc) will wreak havoc to your body.
Also, nandrolone without testosterone will cause terrible side effects, it is really stupid for Pili to give it to his patients.

In a few words, you don't need aas for LL.
When you start walking your muscles will come back very soon. Aas are not a joke, only bbers or people with deficit should take them.
