Showdown at Boot Hill (1958) starring Charles Bronson
« on: February 19, 2018, 02:17:32 PM »

10 years prior to the masterpiece "Once Upon a Time in the West". I didn't go watch this movie and had an expectation that this movie is gonna be about height since Charles Bronson was 174cm, almost 5'9" which is not that short. There are 4 interesting scenes that really got to me:

Scene I

6m44s : The movie begins with Luke Welsh, a bounty hunter trying to arrest his reluctant target who's or at least potrayed to be taller than him

After killing the dude, he said "How tall are you now, big man?" LOL I almost didn't believe that he said what he said. But then standing next to the guy in suit, he was potrayed as significantly shorter than him which is rare in his later career.

Scene II

31m28s : Then at one point, he was in a shop buying a gift for his love interest but he was having a doubt in dating due to his height LOL :

Scene III

50m3s : Another gunfight with a guy that's been pursuing him throughout the movie

To provoke the other guy to start shooting first, he said, "I'm waiting for you, tall man" LOL

Anyway look at how small he is as he's walking past the other guys after the gunfight. It's surprising.

Final Scene

1h5m25s : Then here he is, confiding in his love interest about his motivation of becoming a bounty hunter

His exact quote : "Being short, nobody ever takes me seriously. When I was a kid, became kind of a joke. I didn't like that. So I get out and became a bounty hunter"

The girl replied him saying : "Don't you know that no matter how many men you kill, it aint' gonna make you an inch taller" LOL

Charles Bronson is tbe most badass action hero in Hollywood ever.
The lines you mentioned are indeed very weird as he is not short (especially for his era) and almost never in a movie they don't discuss the main hero's height in a negative way.
Also, in deathwish where Bronson is the main character they never say anything bad about his height.
Anyway it is not the first time that hollywood cultivates negative stereotypes about short (even about average) heights. It is really crazy and stupid.
