The topic about Dr Mahboubian made me think about the ethics of doctors advertising limb lengthening for cosmetic reasons. At first I was getting mad when doctors said they would not do lengthening for cosmetic purposes. But then I started learning more about all the problems that can happen and reading diaries where people disappear and don't update or end up having pain months later. Because of that now I wonder how ethical it is for doctors to advertise the practice for cosmetic purposes. I mean the surgeons definitely know about all the problems that can happen so if they are advertising like "hey come get this to be taller!" then that makes me wonder how much they actually tell you can go wrong or how truthful they are about the risks. So do you think it is wrong for doctors to advertise lengthening for people who don't have unequal limb lengths or deformities?

I don't think CLL should be advertised by doctors. I like the ones who advertise their services for deformity correction and limb length discrepancies without mentioning CLL, but will perform CLL on those who inquire about it. Those who want CLL will look hard enough and be able to find a doctor willing to perform CLL. With all that could go wrong with CLL it does seem a bit unethical to encourage people to get it. Dr M's awful advertisements that try to get shorter males to feel inferior are perfect examples of what limb lengthening surgeons shouldn't do.

That said, I do wish more orthopedic surgeons who are proficient in Ilizarov surgeries would be more willing to perform CLL on those who seriously want it and also understand all the risks involved. I've found some fantastic orthopedic surgeons in the USA who seem like they would be great and safe options that absolutely refuse to perform CLL because they deem it unethical. If those doctors would change their minds and perform CLL, then that would save some people from going to bogus doctors that are more salesman than surgeon.

No, I don't think it's unethical.  As much as I want LL to be a secret so people won't look at my knee height and scars and guess I had it, I can't hold it against doctors for advertising cosmetic surgeries they offer.  I don't see who's being harmed by the ads, unless Dr. Mahboubian is suckering in people to be crippled rather than successfully performing LL.
