Had internal LL 2.5 years ago and have pain after workout
« on: January 26, 2017, 11:52:16 AM »

I had undergone femur LL about 2.5 years ago and lengthened around 7cm with the PRECICE2 nail. I won't specify which doctor had operated on me but the overall procedure was uneventful and I'm happy with my final height.
However one issue that bothers me is the onset of pain in one of my leg after working out in the gym. I mostly do resistance with little aerobic exercises. It's hard to tell where the exact origin of the pain is but I can feel it throughout my leg and that side of the hip. The pain even extends below the knee onto my lower leg even though I haven't lengthened my tibias.
The pain varies in severity each day and mostly begins 20-60 mins after working out and lasts for couple of hours. I usually take 500mg of Paracetamol and 150mg of Ibuprofen which usually decreases the pain within 30 mins.
What really surprises me is that the pain occurs even if I only train my upper body and avoid my legs. I did not have any issues with pain after working out before my LL procedure.

I'm wondering if any of the LL veterans face or had this issue?

Also note that I still have my PRECICE2 rods in my femurs and that this pain only affects one of my leg while the other leg is painless.

One things, the amount you lengthened is the same that amount gained?

Given your time frame, they should have removed the rods over a year ago (not at all saying that it's related to your discomfort post-exertion). Curious as to why they've left them in this long.

I'm thinking of removing the rods early next year. I do hope that the pain subsides or disappears after removing the rods. Frankly I don't know if the pain is due to the rod since I haven't been in touch with my doctor or seen anyone yet regarding my pain.

Interesting. My doctor is insistent that the rods be removed 12 months post-op... no questions asked. Not sure why you havent followed up with your surgeon regarding the pain, ignoring it doesnt seem prudent.

Yeah ignoring the pain and not getting medical advice is not really beneficial. I'll probably see another LL specialist that resides in my country since the doctor that operated on me lives on another continent. With regards to nail removal, I've read mixed opinions online on whether IM removal is more traumatic than keeping them in the bone. Some users also mentioned that doctors in their countries tell them its alright to keep their IM nails in their legs. But I don't know about fully internal nails like PRECICE and whether it would contribute to the kind of pain I face after working out.
To be honest, I'm actually more apprehensive about the nail removal causing more trauma.

It's a magnet....it 100% should not remain in your body indefinitely. Rozbruch makes you pay for the removal ahead of time because in no universe will he allow you to keep it in. MRIs are also out of the question for obvious reasons

I'm wondering if there are any studies that show whether having magnetic implants in the body would have any detrimental effects to the body, besides being around strong magnets like MRI?

I'd advise you to get the rods out of your femurs, bones don't like having metal in them

Regarding knee issues femur lengthening has a high incidence of knee pain, tibia knee pain is generally down to internal lengthening or the im nailing.

There is no good reason for you to still have the nails in your femurs. Now you plan on waiting until next year for removal. Bad idea dude! You shouldn't keep the nails inside your bones for that long.

Why are you asking this question to a bunch of regular people with no medical training in orthopedics instead of your doctor? You really need to contact him, I cant understand why you haven't already.

I'm not an orthopedist, but the symptoms you're describing sound like a lower back issue. Seriously.

It could be possible that the left nail maybe the cause of the knee pain. However I do experience pain around the left hip and the muscles surrounding the femur.

And yes I'll get medical LL advice from a surgeon that resides in my country. If he does perform PRECICE2 removal then I will remove the rods asap. But I'm anxious about whether having the rods removed would exacerbate the existing pain.

Thanks Chris. I am thinking this could be a possibility too since it only affects me after working out and may not have anything to do with the nails after all. I'll get this checked out soon.

The article you posted a link to is about internal fixation devices. You don't have an internal fixation device, you have an internal lengthening device with rare earth magnets inside. Big difference!

You need to contact your doctor or a doctor in your home country and get those nails out ASAP. They should not be in your bones this long, let alone another year which would bring it to almost 4 years. Period. Full stop.

Regardless whether it's an internal fixation device or a internal lengthening device or even both, there is still a risk of exacerbating the existing pain with removing the nails. The nail removal itself has inherent risks and should not be taken lightly. I remember reading Programedude's experience when he had his nail removed by Dr.Rozbruch after a year from his surgery date. Everything seemed fine but then he snapped his femur. Oldiebutgoldie's experience with IM nail removal was an eye opener too and he did mention that the procedure was very serious and it felt to him like he got hit by a truck. Fortunately, he did recover several weeks after his surgery and he felt alot better. People maybe exaggerating the one year rule with IM nails. But with that being said, Paley does quote that the timing is not critical but he does recommend 1 - 2 years after surgery due to the risk of exposing the magnets to body fluids.
Oh well, for me, it's a trade off between the risk of aggravating the pain after the nail removal and additional trauma or the possibility of exposing the rare earth magnets. I've decided to consult the LL specialist in my country and get the nails removed asap. I hope it does improve the condition I'm facing at the moment.

The pain is no doubt caused by the rod still being in your body while working out. It's either rubbing against your hip bone causing this ripple effect of pain throughout your leg. I would get it taken out asap :)

Thanks for your opinion. I'll definitely get this checked out and will try and get the rods removed asap. I hope what you suggested is the case and removing the rods will settle the pain, that's if the surgery goes well.
I'll also consider what Chris had mentioned above, the possibility of lower back issue. In most cases regarding back issues, doctors will ask for MRI anyway and I won't be able to do it with the rods inside, so better to remove the rods.
I'm also thinking of posting a diary solely for rods removal and whether this improves the pain.

Dude, you don't know what you're talking about.. you belong to the same group of people that you're trying to put down.

You can leave the hardware in your body for a long time. Not everyone recovers within a year and a half.
