monorails on femurs and externals only on tibia
« on: March 16, 2014, 03:42:19 AM »

I've been wondering what you guys think about my plan:

I'm 5'7" and would be so happy at being 5'11"

Money of course is ahuge obstacle. I'm wondering if doing 6 cm on my tibias using the lizarov (no nails) and 4cm on femurs using an external method like monorails is a bad idea? My tibias are a bit too small in what they look like compared to my femurs so I'd like them slightly lengthend more. I'm thinking Dr. Barinov in Russia for this as his price seems in my budget. Dr. Franz would be my first choice but he may not take me due to my height and being out of budget.

Also regaining 100% athletic ability is a must as I do boxing and muay thai. I think my plan is within a pretty safe and reasonable lengthening amount as I'm splitting 10cm between upper and lower,  but was wondering what you guys think. Thanks!

I did monorail in femur
so what the problem you may have associate with that

1- misalignment in your femur, since the femur bone is not straight to begin with like tibia
2-  lose some of your knee ROM
3- long time in frame

so for the misalignment it depends upon the doctor that you'll choose, Mitovic performs monorail for the femur and his device looks really light, and I'm sure he is capable to fix problems such misalignment ..

secondly, well  eventually you'll regain you ROM with proper pt after removing the frame "as I read"

For the last point, it depend on you if you can stand the frame for this long time, but since you said it is just 4cm  so I don't think you'll need more than 4-5months which you can handle it " I guess" ..

but why 4 in femur and 6 in tibia?

Well, my tibias look really small comapred to my femurs. Plus I think 2cm extra on my tibs would be safer since im looking into externals on my femurs and I think 4cm can be easily controlled and issues minimized such as ROM like you're saying. What was your healing time like for femurs?  How much did you lengthen?  From start to finish how long did it take? How are you doing now in terms of athletic ability?

How has it been for you? When did you start?  How much are you aiming for? Sorry if you have a diary already.  I'll try to find it if you do. Thanks!

no worry..
-23.9.13, but I started the distraction in my femur in 11.10 .13 ..
- I was able to bend my knee like about 45 deg after the operation I lose it gradually with distraction, another patient who  did his femur with same doctor was able to bend his knee 90 but he lose it gradually too, and he stopped at 3cm..
- I had misalignment when I reached 2 or 3 cm , so I got it fixed at that time
- I fixed my left femur again after 10 daysof first surgery
- I had misalignment again in right femur after reaching 4cm
- I finished the distraction in the mid of dec as I remembered

in term of pain I don't have a much pain in femur, however the pin site is hurting so badly when I move... also it is really uncomfortable since you can't sleep in your side

How are you now? Are you healing well? What's your time frame for removal?  No issues in alignment now? So you did 4cm in your femurs? Would you have done something internal? Or are you happy?

How are you now?
=my knee bending is  15-20 deg
Are you healing well?
=I guess so, although my dr said that fixing the alignment disturbed the callus..
What's your time frame for removal?
=hopefully I'll remove them after 3days
No issues in alignment now?
=In my right femur, I dunno when or whether is my dr gonna fix it, since he keep saying it's ok
So you did 4cm in your femurs?
=I answered that boy concentrate, I lengthened something like 5.6 cm
Would you have done something internal? Or are you happy?
=no internal..
