Questions about ext. femur
« on: July 15, 2016, 11:04:56 PM »

Hey guys hows it going!
What are the disadvantages of external femur for 4 cm of gain? Thinking of using Mitkovic's monorails.. They don't seem to impede knee ROM compared to traditional ilizarov, and I read that axis deviations can be corrected. Frames off is estimated at 6 months post first surgery.
Questionsssss! - Does it damage muscle if the pins go through the muscles? External fixators for tibia aren't painful because don't transect muscle groups, I think. Only painful if there is inflammation. So I am seriously considering ex-fix for femur!
Would there be risk of nerve damage as compared to internal femurs? I heard some internal femurs also get nerve damage...?? So the risk is there as well?

By the way, I just did tibia lengthening of about 8 cm and now I am 6 feet - removed my external fixators about 4 months ago, and have recovered quite a bit of my athletic abilities - can go down stairs fast, can climb up stairs fast with heavy luggage, can jump higher than before, can run 70% as fast as before, have 30% of my previous endurance. Though flexibility has really suffered.
But I expect to recover more =D
Doctor was in Moscow. Legs are aligned on X-rays and real life.

Thanks bruh!  am doing gym workouts - machine exercises on my legs now, at about 20-30 kg, and 50-60 kg even for some =P
But take it easy man.. Don't do too much. I think I lost 0.5 - 1.0 cm after frames removal cause I was in sucha hurry.

Hi Aussie boy,

Have you had any success with research for LL femur with Dr. Mitkovic?

I am interested to know what the recovery time is and also what scaring is incurred.

I have completed tibias with Dr. Mitkovic a few years ago - I have just sent him an email to contact him again, but it is too soon to hear back from him.  Have you made contact and are you still planning to go?

I am planning May 2017 if recovery time is reasonable - I am planning for +4cm to 5cm.

External femurs is probably the most painfull way of doing LL. Don't even compare it to tibia lengthening.

My room mate in India did 4cm on his femurs with the monorail system. It was really painful and the scars were horrible!!

But it went by very quick. He could lengthen 2mm some days so 4cm barely took him 1 month to lengthen and then he got his IMnail inside.

How are scars for external femurs? Do you have pics?
2 mm per day? Was this guy prone to preconsolidation? In most femurs that's too much

2 mm per day is insane, and external femur is risky painful and stupid idea. not recommended at all
