I plan on doing 3-4cms this summer, unfortuntely getting a russian visa seems to be very difficult. I thought about staying at the clinic for around 3-4 weeks and then return home with the frames on.
Would you consider this as too risky? I don't want anything inserted through my knees so I'd prefer external for tibias.

bad idea. leave after the lengthening phase. or don't get your legs lengthened if you cant find the time, resolve to make it happen properly. part of LL is coming to terms with the sacrifice of halting your normal lifestyle.

I agree with FP, you should stay there till you done with lengthening phase, there are lot of complications could happen to you
like what if you had 1-misalignment 2-pre-consildation 3- you bent one of you pins etc...
you need your doctor to deal with that...

I stayed in Russia for 4 weeks, and lengthened in Singapore.. Medical care in Singapore is top notch so I actually feel better in Singapore. My pin-site infection was treated very well in Accident and Emergency and subsequently at the orthopaedic specialist clinic in the tertiary hospital I went to. I was very unhappy with the Russian treatment of superficial pinsite infections. They are so unwilling to give antibiotics, and the antibiotics given topically is quite ineffective. I was forced to self-medicate a variety of antibiotics whilst in Russia: augmentin, cipro and even self-injected ceftriaxone. All this to no avail. I came back to Singapore, was put on Cephalexin which eventually killed the infection, as well as Bactroban cream (muriprocin)

Dr Bagirov and Fahri are very confident that issues are unlikely to arise. They say that, if a bent or broken pin occurs, my home orthopaedic surgeon should be able to replace. But the risk is so low.

Until now, I have no bent pins or whatever. I see my home orthopaedic surgeon every 2-3 weeks.

Lengthening at home, you feel more comfortable. You sleep well. Psychologically you are so much better. I did not like staying at the clinic (clinical environment, and many people looking at you, no privacy) and the hotel (got tired of being alone, with no care-taker or friend with me - except for a few days when a friend came over to bring supplies).

All in all, lengthen at home if you are doing with Dr bagirov. If I had a choice, I would have left at 1 or 2 weeks post-op as suggested by the clinic. (But I wanted to make sure everything was stable)

However, I add the qualifier that the Indian doctors and Dr Barinov's devices are not as stable as Bagirov's. I have heard the surgeon doing so much manipulation when so many issues arise. The indian doctors and barinov are probably not as skilled. In my case, there was no nerve issues, etc, which needed medical advice or intervention. So I think the device stability and operative skill is very important. If you want to do with other doctors, I will recommend you to stay in Russia.

I think crimsontide and armypleb also did the lengthening process at home. Crimsontide had some bad problems but it did not require surgery. Armypleb has severe ballerina but this does not require surgery either. As for me I am at 5 cm with no soft tissue complications. A few times In a day, I do get sharp shooting pains though. That is my only worry.

I actually wanted to do it with Dr. Solomin, Dr. Bagirov would be my second choice though.
The idea of loosing a whole year does not sound very appealing to me, especially since I live in a city with a high medical standart. Having appointments with an orthopaedic once or twice a month should be enough I believe.

Yes, problem is that Dr solomin frames seem weaker (made of thin pins and wires I think) from the pictures I saw. And they are more bulky and inconvenient (Bagirov uses half-rings), and limited range of motion. I think you need to be prepared for change of pins. In fact I asked an orthopaedic surgeon before my surgery if he can do my follow-up care (ie, change pins if needed). He said yes. But in the end I went to another surgeon at a government hospital (cheaper).

They aren't weaker. They both use the same fixation method - half-pins and wires. And half-rings offer less fixation stability, Kulesh uses half-rings for bow-leg corrections and full rings for lengthening, as the latter would need more stability. Here are some pics:

I have done 5 cm and have never had a pin or wire break. But maybe because I am careful not to walk more than 30 mins everyday (I am afraid of compplications).
Please see my diary. I have encountered a very severe problem. I can't lengthen properly anymore for one rod. (Problem seems to be solved, and I can seem to successfully distract 2 mm and reverse-distract).

The images don't show. But dr bagirov did make a very good frame. Anyway if this thing stops at 4.8 cm, I will just accept it. I am already happy being 179 cm tall.

jesus they are beautiful.. are you wearing them? those are full rings? or monorails?? I heard he doesn't have monorails and it is a modified ilizarov (according to him)..

They're half-ring, he uses them specially on bow-leg patients, so he can see the end-result easier. He uses full rings for lengthening patients, that way the construction is more stable.

ask your doctor why your frame is doing that with lengthening and what the reason is. I am very curious to know why. thank you.

@Alittletooshort: why would you choose dr solomin over bagirov? just wondering, cause I might do femurs if I cant gain 7-8 cm on tibia.

He seems very experienced and the fact that the price includes 3 weeks of accomodation is just extremly compelling, he also answered all my e-mails within a day or so, as soon as I recieved his replies it didn´t really think about choosing another surgeon anymore. If it would not workout however, I´d choose dr Bagirov.
The only downside is that he does not help you with getting a visa, I fear that I´ll only get a 30 visa which would suck in chase I´d choose to stay a little longer (like 6-10 weeks max.) :/

He is indeed experienced and seems to have more credentials that Bagirov. But Bagirov is good also, because a Russian patient I spoke to said that he has a good name and was referred to by a Russian friend.

I might do femurs with Solomin. Did he say whether you can do surgery and consultation in the same visit?

I'll ask him about that in specific, I know that he does the surgeries for international patients on wednesdays so I think I'll try to have the consultation on monday or tuesday and have the surgery a day later.

Hi, my friend. I'm so sorry. Lengthening at home is such a bad idea because emergencies happen and you must be next to your doctor so that he can solution your problems. People who come back home are so crazy! Don't do it! You must have a firm commitment to Leg lengthening and take into account that you will have to take at least one year off (if no complication arises).

I totally agree with u.. especially now its public holidays here.. I don't think specialities clinics are open... maybe tomorrow..
especially crimsontide says aftercare is non-existent.. well it is existent but sometimes the doctor takes so long to reply or doesn't even reply..............I finally got an ex post facto reply from doctor... after all is solved... in my opinion its better to lengthen at the country you did the surgery..i change my opinion now

Depending on where you live a surrogate Doctor can do most things for you like rod removal, applying medicine, the downside is that if you need to rather fix the apparatus (not removing permanently) then it is a bad idea.
