Body cleaning during LL period
« on: December 10, 2014, 07:12:41 PM »

Hey guys,

a question popped up in my mind after the doctor told me to stay away from water (which means no shower).

How did you guys clean your body when an external device is on your legs?

I took showers. Water cleans the fixator and helps prevent infections. Just keep the gauze on your pin sites during your shower and change them after drying off.

You shouldn't do that for a few weeks after the first operation. Just wrap up the exfix with some foil, or clean yourself with a wet towel.

Right but that's for the osteotomy sites to heal. Assuming that's done with, showering is fine.

After your osteotomy sites have healed then washing with running water is fine (not sitting in bath water). It helps clean your fixators anyway. Dr Parihar advises washing over your pin sites and as far as I know so does Dr Rozbruch.

Before the sutures (stitches) are removed bath can be taken by covering the operated limb in a plastic to avoid getting the dressings wet.

Once the sutures are removed, usually at the end of 2 weeks from surgery, you are allowed to take bath with the fixator. Keep a separate clean towel for the operated limb and another towel for the rest of the body. Use soap and water to clean the fixator and the limb just as rest of the body. Wipe the limb with the fresh towel. If you have blow dryer (hair dryer) then blow dry the water on the fixator keeping it on cold setting, otherwise the towel will also suffice. Now you can proceed with the routine method of daily Pin care site.

In fact we encourage you to take a regular daily bath with the fixator because that washes away any dust etc. that sets on the fixator and improves the “fixator hygiene.”

I didn't wash myself at all for 5 months.  I was worried about falling in the shower or getting water in a torn pinsite.  I just wore plenty of deodorant and it worked out fine.
