Maintaining muscle mass during lengthening
« on: October 02, 2014, 11:06:40 PM »

Is it possible to maintain some muscle mass during the lengthening process while using internals like the Guichet Nail or PRECICE? I'm pretty muscular, and I'm wondering if I can keep some of my muscle mass (not all lower body mass, of course) with heavy PT and machine training on my legs.

You can, but it won't be realistic or a priority. You are underestimating how much effort LL takes. I've kept an ok foundation bet hemmoraged weight. Just lose your muscle for maximum safety with weight bearing then bulk for two months after consolidation.

You will always lose significant mass i believe, but i did read that creatine supplements is supposed to help maintain muscle mass and function through injury and inactivity. Ive been taking it but i started with it to late in my LL journey to know how good it works for that purpose.

Being a bodybuilder who's underwent this I can say creatine is pointless. It will have you retain a lot of water and be heavier which is bad for weight bearing and give you endurance for the exercises you won't be doing.

Towards the end of month two you will start gaining weight back anyways. Maintaining a bodybuilder physique shouldn't be your focus during the process.

Maybe youre right but its worth considering, this guy makes a pretty good case for it:

During consolidation and after it is great/fine. Shoot up some test and drink some creatine, but before then I think its pointless and is focused on by people who don't have a good grasp on how much they will need to commit to the LL process.

Yeah, i specifically meant taking it during the LL process, not before. But i think it could be beneficial during the lengthening phase as well before consolidation starts, dont you think so?

Not really honestly. I think you want to stay lighter, not load up on water weight. If you were really stressing over it you could start creatine and whatever else you wanted in the final month, stay in a wheelchair and work mainly upper body while keeping your legs active in the pool.

But remember, too muscular and you might have issues lengthening your rods like I did at first. The first two months you really will just be dedicating to getting baseline strength back.

This is coming from someone who originally intended to workout upper body a few times a week the whole process.

I'm sure it take a hell of a lot of effort, but I'm just wondering if it is theoretically-possible to maintain some degree of muscle mass during the lengthening process using leg machines. Obviously I wouldn't be doing any lower body free-weights lol

I would email Paley, he responds quick. I would imagine you could do light leg extensions and calves. Not sure about much else.

I was going to do Guichet, but, yeah, I'll email the experts about this.

I was doing bodybuilding before I went for LL too.

If you're talking about maintaining your upper body muscle mass, I'd say it's possible. But it is a very difficult task. Unless you have lots of motivation and a desire to really maintain your muscle, you're probably gonna lose most of it.

I didn't touch any weights for the first month I returned home from LL. (post-op) and that alone had caused me to lose quite a lot of strength/muscle.

But the good thing is that I have a gym set at home (free weights, barbell, power cage etc). After one month I found some determination to at least work out whatever I can. trust me, when you are not fully weight bearing, the number of bodybuilding exercises you can do is so limited. I stuck to bench press, shoulder press, lat pull downs, and simple arm exercises. It's pretty obvious and easy to figure out what you CAN do and what you CANNOT do given the limited weight bearing. And even if you're on a 'weight bearing' method, you surely won't want to be standing up with those weights anyway. I stuck to a 2-3 day split to workout whatever muscle groups i can, obviously no leg exercises. I managed to keep going for a couple of weeks.

It takes tremendous discipline and effort to stick to a gym routine while doing LL. Don't forget you're probably be on a daily stretching and therapy routine for your legs too. That will take time and energy too. While for most LL-ers time is probably not a constraint but you have to factor in mental strength, discipline and willpower. After forcing myself to work out for about several works, I finally decided that it was not worth the time and mental strength to be struggling with muscle mass or body aesthetics. It was also very inconvenient to even get onto the bench and have SOMEONE else load the weight plates for me. (Yeah, if you're doing bench presses you're probably not able to load the plates yourself.) It was a great hassle and don't forget I had my gym equipment like several metres away from my bed.

Of course, it can be done. After all I stuck to it for a couple of weeks. Worked out 3 times a week. But if you still care about your upper body muscle and what not you're going to have a hard time. LL is already tough mentally and the last thing you want is a concern or being depressed over losing your muscle mass. My advice? Unless you have unlimited energy and will power, go ahead. Else, let it go.

In summary, LL is not going to explicitly stop you from doing bodybuilding (I'm talking about upper body here) but every small thing will suddenly become inconvenient. And don't underestimate this. Also, having sore chests/arms and having to use your arms for loading/transfers/crutches is also not a good feeling. If you do LL, just focus on recovering first and then think about the muscle later. You probably won't be having much of a social life during LL anyway, so who cares if you lose all that muscle. If you already got the muscle, it shouldn't be that hard to really regain them when the time comes right?

That having said, I'm just a guy consolidating. Have given up on lifting weights for now and focusing on my LL. Will probably only resume a routine / diet once I get full weight bearing status. Just my 2 cents.

I think you summed it up well- the first month you won't have your head or body where it needs to be for lifting, and then after that you could do it, but its really now where your priorities will or should be.

I believe that lifting weights during ll would be a waste of time, you wont see any gains, and you will be borrowing nutrients which should have gone to the trauma associated with lengthening.

also if you are high on pain killers you are more likely to damage yourself by accident, and if that does happen you will be up   creek without a paddle. lol :)

I personally think if a person was to continue doing weights it would only be because of some form of OCD where they are addicted to training and just cant let go of that lifestyle.

That is definitely me. I have OCD, ADHD, and Aspergers' Syndrome. I'm obsessed with exercise.

It honestly doesn't sound like LL is something you should pursue then.

I think people who are obsessed can use that determination to help with ll.

I think the real danger lies with people who have OCD where it comes to deciding how much to lengthen, people who don't have OCD already struggle with the obsession of the numbers game. if someone does have OCD they will find it extremely difficult to decide on an appropriate amount to lengthen. rather their OCD will trick them into wanting massive gains as a sheer compulsion and they, through OCD, will be unable to listen to the reality of the dangers of over lengthening.

still you should have consultations with doctors before LL if you have OCD.

I'm only going to do as much as my ll doctor says. I don't want to risk injury.
