Let’s assume i want to gain 5 cm, how long is going to take to start to walk normaly without the device from the day i’m going to have the surgery?

I believe that if you are using the frames, you are looking at 9 to 12 months minimum.   If you are using the internal Styrde nail - 5 to  7 months.

If you do external only it will really take a long time. About 8-12 months depending on many factors. But if you use any internal method you can get it done in 4-6 months...

LON or LATN is also an option. Then you are at about 6-8 months...

Those external devices make for a tough recovery.   I encourage all CLL'ers to go with later technology Stryde internal nails, even if it does cost more money.

For 4cm tibia i was walking unaided 3 months after initial surgery and completely normal by 4 months. I did LON on 1 tibia and LATN on 2nd tibia. Both lengthened using external device. I would recommend stryde only on femur but for tibia externals are better in my opinion.

That is outstanding Jim!  Everyone is different I suppose.   I would say that if you plan on going through the procedure, reserve about 6-8 months as far as your expectation is concerned.  Having said that, you should be able to return to your life at least, by month 3 or 4, only difference is you MAY need to use crutches.

I am at month 5 with externals only and lengthened 5.3cm, not walking unaided but I'm about 1-2 months away, my doctor has said.

Walking reasonably well with a walker. Also I lengthened extremely slow.

Great job, jcayabo!   Honestly, you're recovery sounds like it is going well and very reasonable time line.

Yes everyone is different. Im 27yrs old and was in the best shape of my life. Jogged everyday at work so my legs were really flexible and in good shape. Im sure that helped my recovery out in so many ways. 6-8 months should be what everybody sets aside for LL. I really pushed myself doing pt and was determined to walk way before my timeline. Even if your in pain, push yourself just a little more each day, thats how i seen it.

Thinking this over a bit. If you have a very smooth 5cm lengthening, you might get that 6 month recovery with no issue.  Never know; but always a chance.  Are you planning on going through with the surgery soon?

If your consolidation is super slow and you do pure ilizarov not LON nor LATN
It can take like 10 months or even more than that to walk without crutches
Besides if you get severa contracture, it can take even more than a few years
In very unfortunate case, cartridge was destroyed and never be able to walk without crutches
In case of MM, she is still on wheelchair after so many reop like more than 16 reoperations(however she did internal with one of worst doctors, most pure ilizarov doctors don’t seem very good either)

Considering high risks, I would recommend you to do Stryde rather than externals if your priority is time

I’m going to talk with Dr. Pili at the end of April, if he says i can get away with atleast 5cm on tibias, probably i will take the surgery this winter
