Short around the world - is it really the same?
« on: May 14, 2018, 11:02:34 PM »

I made a very interesting experience with my height in two different countries.

In "middle school" in Germany I was confronted with my height almost every single day. Especially the ones who weren't that much taller always reminded me of how small I am. Not always in a mean way, they just had fun doing that like children. Since girls were still attracted to me (they maybe thought I would grow sometime) I could manage the psychological frustration of being the smallest in my grade. Some just feel good about themselves degrading others. So I responded to one of the guys who commented about my height (he wanted to feel better):"At least I get girls unlike you" then he was silent.

Then I made a student exchange year in the U.S in high school in the northwest and my experience was totally different. During the whole year only one single guy commented on my height. I almost forgot my height because the school was much more diverse, many guys from mexico and asia were there. It felt like no one cared about superficial things. I constantly was complimented about my appearance. I was even called beautiful, cute or hot. In Germany I almost never had that experience. On my very first day (not lying) a taller girl than me was interested in me and another girl sometime later asked me if I like taller girls, too.

When my time in the U.S. was almost over I was pretty sad because I knew exactly that my height will bother me again and I was right. As soon as I got back, people were talking about my height again, but I was mentally stronger now. I wasn't mad about them anymore, I just didn't take them serious.

I don't know if I would have done LL If I grew up in a liberal city in the U.S. where it is diverse with every size...

Has someone had similar experiences?

I dont think that in US are less shallow aboit height than Germany.
Maybe latin america and arabic countries have no strict height standards for men, nowhere else in the world.
And especially in west like US and EU.

It seems that the most wealthy a country is the biggest the height complexes are.
Maybe western civilization is not so "civilized" after all.

Hey, some nice stories out of the US. Good change of pace.

And it's true that people care less about height in other countries.

I feel like it's absolutely no coincidence people seem to care more about height in the countries that ended up being the tallest in the world.

I'd argue that the US is the most superficial place in the world

In the middle East height seems also to play a role but more for the rich and independent people who have a choice.

I think the U.S. in itself is too diverse/big as to generalise how the people are. I had the best experience but I guess it would have been different in another city/village there.

I am from US. Never been to Germany. Though I met a few German people that were nice and never commented about my height. They were adults though and you were with kids that are childish and shallow. When I was in middle school height didnt really matter and there were plenty of girls that liked me but I think, like you said, they were probably thinking I was gonna grow. Granted, there are still alot of shallow females in US, too. I always wondered why they were so interested about height and then one day a light bulb went off and I realized they liked tall guys because tall guys look bigger and proportionally more attractive I guess (?). For instance, there was this good looking tall guy in the school house and I would imagine him to be my height and he wasn't attractive anymore if I imagine him to be short, I dont know how to explain but facially he didnt look as good as he did in real life. Thats when I understood the shallow females. I dont know. But I'd assume Germany would be more heighist since historically its been that way, theyre pretty tall people on average.

Definitely depends on the part of the US, diversity helps to mix things up. Like you mentioned, multiethnic communities have generally shorter people.

I'm not certain that they care less about height (there's no penalty being taller), but rather their standards of normal stature is lower, so you feel more average. Makes sense when their parents are short, upbringing helps to define what's "normal."

In Japan, height is definitely a plus. Unlike the US it's not diverse at all, and they're quite conservative, so experimentation with hairstyle and fashion are also limited. Even unique personalities are somewhat unwelcome. This means that physical features like height can really make you stand out among a crowd. Their definition for average height is different of course, I've seen polls that the ideal male height is around 175 cm (5'9").

Canadian person here. And people are really shallow. Short people get treated with less respect and make way less money. I feel like LL I my only option at a normal life. Especiall y for being a short person.
