LON and internal
« on: July 24, 2018, 05:31:04 AM »

Please correct me. LON involves inserting a rod inside the tibia. Is it the same process as the internal method?  It seems that LON is more complicated and why it is cheaper in general ?

LON, lengthening over nail, still requires frames. Once lengthening is completed, the nail that was inserted in the first surgery is locked in place, then the frame is removed.

When we say internal lengthening, it means no frames. Devices like the Precice nail is lengthened via an external controller which activates a magnet inside the nail. This does indeed cost more, but you're paying for much improved patient comfort, especially for femurs.

I have read for femur internal should be better and for tibias external cause of risk for permanent knee pain. But LON also need nail with frames so why is it better than internal? I dont get it. Sorry I am  new, too

I think are confused here - internal/LON/LATN cause risk of knee pain, not external.  - the reason any kind of internal (yes you are right LON/LATN also are kind of internal thing and this problem is applicable to LON and LATN as well) increases permanent knee pain possibility is because the rod someway or other touches the knee joint. The only reason one could think of calling LATN/LON better tan internal for tibia would be cost, there is no other reason I see and nobody could convince me otherwise (though some people may say it is easy to do corrections , fix misalignment etc. during lengthening with external, so LATN/LON is better than internal).
