Tibia lengthening- which s more important, stretch or exercise?
« on: January 29, 2023, 08:18:40 AM »

For tibia lengthening, do you stretch more or do you exercise more?
Obviously you do both, but which is more important? I’m confused because on this forum, I mostly hear about people stretching. But I got in touch with a representative of Dr Donghoon Lee (Korea) in Japanese, and she kept calling it “exercise.” I thought that you mostly stretch, and less importance is placed on exercise? It’s an important difference to me, because I love stretching but I hate exercising. I’d have a much easier time if it’s stretching.

You have way less stretching with tibias than femurs.  But even so id say stretching during LL is always most important.  During consolidation that starts to flip and its time to strengthen.

Thank you for the info! What you say is consistent from what I’ve heard from other LLers- during tibia lengthening, you have to be exercising/stretching constantly, but for femurs, you can get away with a lot less (like people do 2 hours/day and they turn out fine).

To understand what you’re saying better, could you please tell me if something like this is what you’re thinking of?:
tibia lengthening – 4 exercise : 6 stretch
femur lengthening – 2 exercise: 8 stretch
consolidation – 7 exercise: 3 stretch

I didn't do any exercise during my tibia lengthening.  Just standing pike stretches bent at the waist with my forearms on the seat of a chair.  And putting sand bags on my knees.  Maybe an hour to an hour and a half per day total

"And putting sand bags on my knees"

Curious, what did this do?

Forces your legs to straighten out, thus stretching your hamstrings.

This is a very interesting way of stretching the muscles!
I haven't heard of this method, but I guess different doctors have different ways of doing things. :)

I think they use EXERCISE to mean the same as STRETCH.

However, stretching after leg lengthening surgery also requires using muscle strength.

This is a HSS Hospital physical therapy manual.

Most of the content is stretching. But you will understand that muscle strength is also used.

Thank you! This link is helpful. I'll study it. It does seem that when it comes to LL, the line between exercise and stretch blurs somewhat

The tibia is the most difficult stretch in extension and more important.
