Ways to speed up bone consolidation
« on: May 23, 2014, 03:15:00 PM »

I was reading this blog post and it say bone stimulator Exogen 4000 help speed up his bone fracture.

Four methods being studied by Stanford School of Medicine

There's this Dr in Serbia who use special treatment  to heal muscle injuries for footballers.  I wonder if it works for bone too.

Are there others ways to speed up bone consolidation  that may work?

Aside from eating right and getting all your vitamins, the Exogen is the only other way I've heard of that helps speed up bone consolidation. I'm not sure how much of a benefit getting an Exogen is though. Your bone consolidation will be faster but I don't think there's anything you can do to speed up the healing of your tissues so you'll still be impaired for the about the same amount of time.

But with good bones you can walk unaided quicker which will encourage much faster tissue regeneration no?

Did internal femurs with Prof. Betz in February 2014.
Goal 9cm, but ended up doing 10 (whoohoo). Now off crutches and walking funny, but getting better quickly.

Great thread idea, here is a supplement that the clinic in Moscow sold me, its improves healing of fractures, its called Osteogenon:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17526198

^this study supports the benefits of the supplement.

^ And it can be ordered online here, quite expensive though. I intend to take them sublingually from now on when i get my delivery for greater potency.

The article about the Stanford study mentions that bone regeneration in the face is quicker than other bone regeneration due been more vascular and having more blood flow.  This is the reason why it's good to be active during lengthening and biking will help with blood flow to your legs and help then heal quicker.  This is why Betz and Guichet encourage activity.  Also this activity helps combat muscle atrophy.

Scientifically only valid, quick and safe method for bone healing & consolidation during limb lengthening (and for many other injuries) is to inject Plasma Rich Protein Injection at least once during healing process.
You dont need to buy any kit or online dodgy thing etc.

If your Doc is competent enough then he can order PRP (or PRF if want even better result) to be isolated (from donated blood) in lab (thin kit cost 1-5k for enough PRP to be isolated) and injection into bone site is simplest thing.
If injected near scar site it can also reduced scar formation.

I wont advise to buy anything online without knowing its background. Please dont confuse Distraction Osteogensis in Head and Neck with Limb lengthening, both have slightly different mechanism.

you can get forteo by prescription, osteoporosis drug

PRP of FFP < fresh frozen plasma > is used for alot of coagulopathies if you have a high coumadin or heprain level or if you are deficient in some clotting factors.

I like the idea of getting a titanium rod put in and just walking without support, apparantly that does wonders.

Bone consolidation is enhanced by rhBMP-2 in a rabbit model of distraction osteogenesis.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12168667

"Radiographic evaluation indicated a significant increase in bony union of the distraction regenerate in the rhBMP-2 treated groups compared with the untreated groups at 5 and 14 days. At 28 days, formation of a cortex and reestablishment of the medullary canal was evident only in the rhBMP-2 treated groups. The bone mineral content (BMC) of the regenerate was significantly higher in the rhBMP-2 treated groups at 5 and 14 days. However, at 28 days, BMC of the regenerate was similar in all groups. The average volumetric density of the regenerate was significantly higher in the rhBMP-2 injection group at day 14. In Summary, both injection of rhBMP-2/buffer and implantation of rhBMP-2/ACS enhanced the consolidation stage of distraction osteogenesis in this rabbit model."

Another research on rhBMP-2 but on humans with open fractures.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12473698

RESULTS:
Four hundred and twenty-one (94%) of the patients were available for the twelve-month follow-up. The 1.50-mg/mL rhBMP-2 group had a 44% reduction in the risk of failure (i.e., secondary intervention because of delayed union; relative risk = 0.56; 95% confidence interval = 0.40 to 0.78; pairwise p = 0.0005), significantly fewer invasive interventions (e.g., bone-grafting and nail exchange; p = 0.0264), and significantly faster fracture-healing (p = 0.0022) than did the control patients. Significantly more patients treated with 1.50 mg/mL of rhBMP-2 had healing of the fracture at the postoperative visits from ten weeks through twelve months (p = 0.0008). Compared with the control patients, those treated with 1.50 mg/mL of rhBMP-2 also had significantly fewer hardware failures (p = 0.0174), fewer infections (in association with Gustilo-Anderson type-III injuries; p = 0.0219), and faster wound-healing (83% compared with 65% had wound-healing at six weeks; p =0.0010).
CONCLUSIONS:
The rhBMP-2 implant was safe and, when 1.50 mg/mL was used, significantly superior to the standard of care in reducing the frequency of secondary interventions and the overall invasiveness of the procedures, accelerating fracture and wound-healing, and reducing the infection rate in patients with an open fracture of the tibia.
