Advice on whether to do LL in September 2022 or Jan 2023?
« on: October 29, 2021, 04:01:20 AM »

Currently, I plan to do internal femur gnail with Giotikas in September 2022

I'm debating- do I do it in September 2022 (about a year from now) or do it in December of 2022 (slightly more than a year from now)

Pros of switching over to December 2022 (delaying it):

- I am currently planning to take a difficult summer course (biochem) in 2022. However, if I take it slightly later in the fall of 2022 instead, it will likely be much easier because it will be spread out over a longer period of time. And I can take fewer than 4 courses that semester to give me an advantage
- Over the course of the fall, it is possible that I will make about 2000$ more, but I don't know if that could offset even a modest price increase in LL though or offfset inflation though

Cons of delaying it:
- price might increase? Inflation?
- Even a price increase of LL of like 5000 USD would be ouch

There is also the X factor of when I, as a healthy young person, can get the third covid shot too in the USA. I'd really like to get my third shot before leaving the USA.

Are there other pros/cons I haven't thought of? What's your advice?

Pros of early: Less time to second guess. Less time for other things to come up that would delay you more (avoid snowball effect?). Be taller and recover sooner. Biochem is just one class out of what like 40, and you can still do well if you work your ass off (who said you can't study while LLing)

Cons of early: biochem was my lowest grade in college (and that of all my friends I know). Granted, it was a whole year's worth of material condensed into one 2.5 month course at my institute.

It’s a small factor, but getting the surgery when it’s hotter outside can be very helpful for keeping your muscles loose.

The main worry on my mind is

1) inflation from September 2022 -> January 2023

2) cost of the treatment increasing from September 2022 -> January 2023

3) US dollar weakening relative to the Euro from September 2022 -> January 2023

4) On the other hand, waiting longer increases the chances I will be able to get a third covid shot before the surgery. But I wonder if as a young healthy person if I just won't be able to get a third covid shot in the USA. (got two moderna shots already)

Maybe you can "secure" the current price by making a deposit, some doctors do that. But check if it is at least partially refunded in case something happens.
Don't forget also you need some time to prepare physically, it seems specially important with G-nail.

Thanks for the heads up. What have you heard?

Check if Dr. Giotikas keeps the same protocol.
Dr. Guichet foresees a one month pre op preparation specific program with sports technicians and PTs who work in coordination. You can "buy" this ""add-on" or not and do your own preparation based on the doctor's advice, without having to travel 1 month before surgery.
From general information and also doctor's advice, the sooner you start lengthening  even before, the better.
If Dr. Giotikas has not implemented this pre op program you surely can easily ask them what kind of preparation you should ask the PTs where you are, before travelling (the better equiped they are the better).
