Surgery with Giotikas next year (I hope)
« on: October 31, 2020, 02:59:29 PM »

Hello guys,
I'm a 172 male from Spain. Even though I'm not "short", I have suffered from severe height neurosis for the last years: I almost never leave my house, I'm always thinking about it etc etc. I'm really fit and I love sports, so I was kind of scared about the surgery, but I have decided that I want to do it in order to take my life back. Right now I have 15 k, and my idea is to save up to 30 k, getting a loan for the rest and doing 5 cm femur STRYDE with Giotikas. If I do it next year, I will post my diary¡ I have some questions if anyone can help me:

- I know the results depend a lot on the individual: there are guys jogging at 6 months post op and there are other who can't walk. If I got 5 cm and like 80% ahtletic recovery I would be happy. My question is this: is there anything I can do right now to have a better chance at recovering? I'm stretching my harmstrings like crazy¡

- I have a small bulging disk in my lumbar spine, it hurts sometimes. Do you think that it can affect the surgery anyhow?

Thanks¡¡

it shouldnt affect the surgery too much, it may affect the method of anaesthesia.
the only thing i could think of is if the pain from your disk affects your ability to complete your physio

Yeah, that's what I'm worried about. It's not really bad, but it hurts me If I bend over. I'm also worried that it gets worse, due to the loss of muscle in my butt and lower back.

My harmstring and quads are good, but I started strecthing IT bands and they are really tight lol. I better stretch them really hard every day from now on.
I also guess that it would be good to have strong glutes right? In order to avoid anterior pelvic tilt or "duck ass".

You'll have those issues, it's pretty much impossible to avoid them. They are just temporary so don't worry.
Keep a good body condition and a good muscle mass, for example start with the gym if you still don't go there, or at least start running or bicycle.
Tissues have their own max flexibility due for the most by your genetics/age, so even if you stretch them very much now that's not so useful. An important thing is an healthy and proteic diet during distraction, in addition to that clearly many exercises are useful to keep your body in the best condition possible, clearly without exceed in stretching intensity (you don't have to damage your tissues!) but doing them every day with costancy, not being lazy.
In addition I think that is better to avoid full weight bearing during distraction, using crutches is way safer.

I thought that full weight bearing was recommended with STRYDE. Should I use crutches during the 2 months of distraction?

Weight bearing is possible but actually not recommended. I mean, most of people walk unaided very quickly, Paley says you can walk unaided as soon as you have your balance back, but for example Nuvasive says that you need bone formation before leaving walker/crutches, even with stryde.
I've seen nail bending quite often, I say this because many people here think you can do whatever you want very quickly, but there's always a risk, and if a nail bends/brokes it will be always your fault, nobody will take the blame for you.
I say this to warn everybody to be very careful if they want to walk unaided; you could, but your are not risk free. You have to consider your weight and the nail size too.

I also think that, despite being very fit due to the gym, I don't walk as much as I should, because I work from home. I have decided to walk at least 8.000 steps per day, in order to have my legs in great condition before the surgery. It's a good idea right? I just want to do everything I can to have a good recovery and be able to run again

If you already play sports and workout at the gym it's great, the most important thing is having a good physical condition overall. For example one of the most important movement during distraction is the DIP. You will use very much your arms, expecially during first weeks. So go on with your sports activitity routine, start running or walking if you can and that's all.
If you are a young man be patient and you'll have your athleticism back.

According to Donghoon, most people who lengthened their tibia 5cm had complete recovery in their athletic abilities. I don't know if the same applies to femurs, but Donghoon has had probably hundreds of cosmetic cases so if he says something it is probably right.

Giotikas offers TSF for tibias as well, for a much lower price. Of course the discomfort is bigger and there will be scars, but I think it is also a lot less invasive than shoving the nail in your femurs, and it allows for correction of any malalignment. If I was going for only 5cm, I'd take this route. Perhaps it is worth considering.

I'm thankful for your suggestion, but time for recovery is also longer right? Another issue is that I had issues with the flexibility of my tibias when I was kid: I had a bit of ballerina foot and I needed PT for recovery. Even though I have no issues now, I'm worried that I would have that problem with tibias, so I chose femur, as my harmstrings and quads are really good
