How to very accurately measure your height and sitting height
« on: August 25, 2020, 06:38:12 PM »

The best way to accurately know your height if you are pedantic like me and don't have a good stadiometer (even a lot of the ones at the doctor's aren't super accurate) is by acquiring a metal aerosol can (like a room freshener or a better version of Pringles can or something) that is straight (make sure rim is on level with the rest of it) and atleast 7.5-8 inches long so it touches the top of your skull and a spirit level which checks how perpendicular the wall is to the floor within 0.5 mm accuracy: if when put against the wall the bubble comes to the exact middle you can safely say your wall is well aligned and can be used for a precise measurement since wall curvatures are very pretty much visually imperceptible and can have significant variations.

Stand straight facing the wall while your head is in a Frankfurt plane with good posture, breathe in partially and bring the can down while it is perpendicular to the wall firmly so that it touches your skull and mark it with a sharp pencil. Now the mark can be a little below the can so if it is just add an extra mm or so to the measurement you get from the bottom to the pencil mark with a steel tape measure verified by the metrology department. Record your measurement to the nearest decimal cm.

Now your height varies throughout the day due to release of fluids and compression of your spine due to gravity which is reversed after laying down. Going by the maximum measurement you get in the morning is illogical because you can hold it for a few minutes only, so on average a measurement taken 5 hours out of rising from bed would be considered your height with some reasonable level of time on your feet and physical activity and no lying down between that time.

Measuring your sitting height is tricky without a stadiometer so you could just get a rough measurement by sitting up straight on a flat sturdy surface with your head in a Frankfurt plane and someone or you holding a tape measure and looking into the mirror if doing it yourself and just where your the middle of your eye level comes up since spotting the exact mark top of your head can be tricky and if we do it using the can there is a lot of room for posture errors. So whatever eye level mark you get in inches (because they are less precise and we are getting a rough measurement anyway) + 4.5 inches which is the average distance from top of skull to eye level is your sitting height.

Your sitting height can change with the amount of fat or muscle you have by something like 2 cm.

The aesthetic limit of your cormic index (sitting height/height in the same units of course) is 0.49 minimum before it starts to look odd so keep that in mind with your lengthening goals.
