Hoping for some real suggestions
« on: June 04, 2020, 03:12:09 AM »

Hi Guys!
This is my first LL forum. Two weeks ago, I had never thought about LL because it sounds like surgery from Mars. Btw I'm Chinese and LL is banned and so is Google, so all the previous videos I've seen of LL are terrifying. Then one day I stumbled across a LL animation and I found out all of this. It's actually a pretty mature surgery in some way and it's not exactly complicated as well, compared with like surgeries in the knee or something. Also, I'm referring to 6 and under surgery only, one section of the leg in a experienced hospital like Greece and Germany, tibia or femur, not talking about both cause that is a completely different story.

I have been taking this LL very seriously in the past few days, but is still very hesitant and here are the reasons why:
1. No  , it's very expensive, if I do it its either Athens most possibly (Reasonable price), or Germany because its orthopedics is one of the best in the world but too expensive. Btw what's the difference between the BETZ bone technology comparing with the Precise stryde? They seem kind of similar to me.
2. I am living fine without it, never had issues finding women, I have a very stable relationship with my girl. But height has always been something i really wanted. One, my dad is taller than me and that sucks!! Growing up, both of my parents always told me to grow taller, we want you to be taller, look at your friend bla bla bla bla. Two, to face the facts, 172cm is borderline short and I'm just generally not happy with it. I believe its takes a lot to be human for once, and WHY NOT!! YOLO!!! 6 months in total to get back to normal with a new life and you can live the rest with so much more satisfaction! Ive just turned 24
3. I have not found on the forum one single person that has proven themselves to recover after LL. Of course, you see replies here and there like i have fully recovered but they disappear and leave no evidence that they did it. Most diaries just stopped updating and I really want to talk to somebody that has had it for at least 2 years.
4. It sounds CRAZYYYYYYYYYYY!! Literally breaking your legs for another few inches of height, and have you guys seen the surgery on youtube? Its like rough carpentry! Drills saw, and stuff like that.
5. I'm very healthy never had a major illness in my life. I work out everyday, enjoy hiking, and play a lot of basketball. I understand there is a cost to everything, and I see my self as a pretty dedicated person. I've been working out 1 hour every day for the past 6 years, I think I'll be able to keep up with the PT. But once again, I wish to talk to somebody who has had this for some time. I want to know how your doing, hows jumping, hows running, hows walking, does your leg hurt when its cold, do you permanently have the duck walk.

Andddddd that's about it. I wish the kind people in this forum can give me experience and suggestions, a lot of people NEED these answers, its not even about curiosity anymore, these suggestions will actually mean a lot to someone across the world. So please be honest!!

Thank you, I hope your guys are doing well in this chaotic time

1. Are you 100% sure LL is illegal in China?  It was banned at most but not all hospitals in 2007 when I got it done there.  Maybe that has changed though.  It was only 25,000 USD and that was an inflated foreigner price.  Domestic patients paid less than half.  Stryde is the best nail because it combines full weight bearing and automatic distraction.

2.  I doubt you'll get back to normal in 6 months even if you use Stryde, the best nail and Paley, the best doctor.

3.  I had it 13 years ago.  I'm about 85% of my previous strength/agility.  I'm starting to worry about what will happen when I get older though.  Lots of old men who didn't break and lengthen their legs have trouble walking.  That will probably be sooner and worse for me. :'(

4.  I didn't see it, but I felt the hammering and heard the noise from the tools. :o

5.  How I'm doing: OK but not great, 100% glad at first but regretting it a little more as time goes on.
Jumping: about the same from a standstill, worse for a running jump because it's harder to land properly.
Running: 85% speed.
Walking: I got exertional compartment syndrome in my tibialis anterior muscles. This was corrected with fasciotomy surgery.  Not an issue for you since you seem to be considering femurs.
Weather: The weather does not affect how my legs feel.
Duck walk: not an issue for me since I did tibias.

If you have other questions, I have my own thread here referenced below. :)

Omg, thank you. Yes LL is illegal for cosmetics purposes in China or else it would have blown up. Just think about how many short people there are. Not racist just facts, Im Chinese my self.

I just read through your thread and came up with these conclusions.

You did Lon in Beijing

You don't think you have fully recovered, you feel your calves are bigger because they are worked on more, and the major problem is stiffness and it has caused your regrets.

You had duck feet before your surgery, and so do I, I also want to do tibias. Asian people have a shorter tibia comparing with other races. However mine duckfeet ain't that bad, its slightly outward by like 20 degrees, I don't know about yours, can you elaborate on that.

You also mentioned you don't do sports at all and my question is did you do stretching like you were supposed to? Do you still stretch now? Is there a thing called maximize stretch, did the doctors tell you that or do you assume that you cant stretch any further? You did 3 inches and I only want to do 6cm max, but some people are doing 10, 11, 12 and if your feeling stiff, i cant imagine how they walk.

Thank you for your post, and i think your very honest, but damn I was hoping for some positive outcome.

Another problem is tendonitis in my knees.  I've called that "knee issues" or "knee pain" on here before but I'm pretty sure that's the correct diagnosis.

I did a moderate amount of stretches.  I still do Yoga almost every day, but the focus isn't entirely on the legs so it's only a few minutes a day of leg stretches.  Maybe a more athletic person like you will do better.  What helped me gain the most flexibility was just standing and walking.  When the entire body weight is put on tendons that are too short, they WILL lengthen.  It's harder to do that yourself through a regular stretch, so once you can stand and walk normally, the big, quick gains in flexibility will stop being made.

The tightness/stiffness I mentioned that still bothers me a little bit is mostly in my right Achilles tendon.  Dr. Peng examined me in 2009 and said it wasn't bad enough to require surgery, but the problem exists and I notice it sometimes.

Keep in mind 2007 is different than 2020. There's stryde, there's IT band release during surgery, there's better surgical technique, theres alot more. Don't use 2007 anecdotes. And yes, LL is banned in China, was banned after Drink of Water got it.

This surgery is unnecessary physically. Don't get it unless you are 100% sure height is a mental problem for you and it can't be fixed.

You will not return to 100% no matter what. I have literally never seen anyone return to 100%. Keep this in mind. Personally, I could live without being an athlete- I don't mind not being able to run at 100%, or have limited athleticism, I think the tradeoff is worth it for me since curing height neurosis is much better than being extremely active. I don't do sports lmao, I'm fine running a 8:30 minute mile instead of 6:00 mile, doesn't affect me. Stretch wise, many people become stretchy after surgery cuz thats prolly the first time they treated stretching as a religion in their lives. They could prolly stretch better pre-LL if they committed to stretching for hours a day for months. haha food for thought

Stryde won't give you a better long-term outcome, it will only improve mobility and comfort during distraction.

IT band release has been around since way before I got LL.

Surgical technique has not changed or improved since before I got LL.  Dror Paley was practicing back then doing the same stuff he's doing now, just with a lower tech nail.  That's all.
