How long does it take to do 8cm femurs with Betzbone?
« on: March 21, 2021, 03:21:07 AM »

I wanna do the femur limb lengthening with Betzbone since Stryde isn't available right now. Does anyone know how long it will take from the surgery date to when I can return to walking normally/return back to my home country after lengthening 8cms?

In theory from what I've read you can go home after 4-5 weeks but the biggest risk with this approach in general (Betzbone) is he only requires you to do an xray once a month and you can't reverse the clicks if you expand too quickly.

I'm convinced this is the main reason Betz gets nonunions. I think you could go home that early but you ought to keep doing xrays every 2 weeks maximum and adjust click rate accordingly to be safe.

Walking from what I've seen in the diaries with an reasonable manner is 2-3 months.

I have just started distraction but Betz has advised me to lengthen 1mm per day for the first 3cm and then slow down to 0.75mm after that unless there is rapid bone growth. I’ve just had an x Ray at less than 2 weeks post op after leaving hospital and will do another in 2-3 weeks before I fly home. Then at home it will be once a month. I am aiming for 7-8cm. Feel free to ask any other questions.

Thanks for both your responses

Do you know how long it will take before you can start walking normally for 8cm? Also do you know about whether it's hard to get a visa to do the surgery because of covid? I'm from Canada.

I’d say 1-2 months before I can start walking without looking like a penguin. I’m walking quite well with the crutches at the moment. For 8cm, you will probably walk normally 5-6 months post surgery.

I’m not sure if Canadians need a visa but from my country I didn’t need one and just entered visa free which allows me to stay in Germany for 90 days. I think it’s the same for Canada but just double check online.
