About Doctor Dror Paley and thoughts of Cosmetic Lengthening
« on: November 20, 2014, 07:27:22 PM »

As some may know I am planning for India most likely for lengthening because Russia visa is too hard to get now. I started looking up doctors there and then I found this article in Times of India from year 2001 about Doctor Dror Paley visiting Mumbai. Here is what it says.

"Prominent orthopaedic surgeon and professor Dr Dror Paley was in the city recently for a three-day seminar on the treatment of limb deformities and discrepancies. Along with Dr Mangal Parihar, Paley talked to over 60 orthopaedic surgeons at Harkishandas hospital about limb lengthening and reconstruction using the famous Ilizarov method among others. Paley teaches at the university of Maryland School of Medicine and is director of the Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopeadics at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, USA. Parihar teaches at k j somaya medical college and performs surgeries at Mangal Anand hospital, Chembur. "The treatment of limb deformities and discrepancies is a highly specialised discipline as it is fairly complicated. There is a select core of surgeons across the world who can see this treatment through and sustain the effects for a lifetime. There are several orthopaedics who practice limb reconstruction techniques. Whether all of them are equipped with the necessary experience is another matter," says Paley.

The Ilizarov technique was invented in 1951 by a Russian scientist of the same name. He propounded the possibility of bone and tissue being capable of regenerating if forced apart in controlled quantity using external, mechanical force through an an external fixator device. This force distracts the bone into expanding to fill the space, thereby lengthening itself. This treatment has been used globally, including in India, for decades to treat arthritis, joint replacements, leveling legs and arms and serious fractures. Paley was the first to introduce the technique in North America in 1986 after having studied with Ilizarov.

Several new methods have been evolved since then and Paley feels the pace of development makes it imperative for him to travel to several countries, educating faculties. This was his eighth visit to India. "The treatment is particularly useful for India because of the high number of road accidents. The unique and welcome aspect of these techniques are the minimal need for technology. As Parihar says, in Indian public hospitals, the treatment costs next to nothing if they already have the equipment. In places like far-flung Siberia, there aren't even x-ray machines and still the procedure is successfully administered. Going by that, "The Indian medical fraternity should take the method to rural India where it's desperately needed," says Paley. Criticizing the exploitation of limb lengthening techniques for cosmetic purposes, chiefly height increase, Paley said it's highly dangerous for normal people to go in for this treatment, especially if the surgeon lacks expertise or experience and hasn't informed them of the risks which are several and compounded. Having performed over 700 Ilizarov procedures, Paley also has a few cosmetic surgery cases to his credit but he claims to have dissuaded his clients from opting for them."You need super experts with impeccable track records for cosmetic limb lengthening. Even then, the treatment is better avoided with those without physical complications."

So this article got me thinking. First what I put bold is the part where Paley says there is only very few surgeons you should go to for lengthening because it is complicated even though there are many surgeons. How true do you think this is? I mean I know you should not go to someone like joint replacement surgeon for Ilizarov, but shouldn't you be okay with any Ilizarov trained surgeon? Do you think Paley says this because it is true or because a small group of surgeons want to have most of the cosmetic lengthening market to themselves?

Second, Paley says that limb lengthening has been exploited for cosmetic purposes and goes on to say how dangerous it is. But from what I understand Paley is wanting to open centers in Japan and Mexico primarily for offering cosmetic lengthening. What do you think made him change his mind to start wanting to offer cosmetic lengthening all over the world? For those who have met Paley, does he still discourage you from surgery in consultation or does he seem encouraging for you to get it?

Paley is the worst kind of person. He always say don't lengthen more than 5 cm when that all he could do with ISKD. Then when PRECICE could do 6.5 all of a sudden his limit was 6.5. Now that PRECICE is 8 CM Paley has magically decided that he can safely do that amount. I don't know why all of you keep suk his dck so hard. He is a salesamn trying to make money and he will do what he needs to sell you his expensive surgery. Wasn't someone just saying Paley said any doctor but him would cripple them? He is the only doctor that says that.

He is a great surgeon but also a business plan. I can confirm he is very intent on further establishing himself- as he is working on a connection that would bring people conveniently from japan to his center and apparently start a mexico clinic, as well as update his site.

Of course he is going to want to push for himself over others, especially since I am sure he believes he's the best- whether he believes people will be invariably butchered elsewhere is another matter. Keep in mind he does genuinely see people brought in who were butchered elsewhere, including the US so its understandable he would just advise universally against going anywhere else.

His business plans are contradictory to his comments in the article surely. Though better him doing mass production cosmetic lengthening than many others I suppose.
