LATN vs LON
« on: January 23, 2016, 02:48:36 AM »

I am getting conflicting information the more I research the difference. Some say it's almost the same, while others say LON is better since LATN you're inserting the rod into the bone while it has already started healing. Another side says that LATN is safer because any issues would be corrected first, the rod is more capable for weight bearing and there are no knee issues.

My main worry is knee issues and less time vs external. Can someone compare the two and tell me which they prefer. Most doctors I have messaged seem to ignore this question too.

Unfortunately there is no easy answer.   Like you said, LON and LATN both have advantages and disadvantages.

I keep reading diaries on a daily basis to get as much information as I can, and will not stop until the day I decide to get the operation.   If I were to get LL today and was on a tight budget, I would do external tibias with Ilizarov type device with at least 4 rings per leg (no LON or LATN).   Also the surgeon you chose is going to be very important because an inexperienced surgeon or experienced but clumsy can injure you during the operation causing scary complications.

Lastly, I would rather spend more time with frames on, than subject my poor legs to additional trauma by installing the nail, and have to worry about removing it 2-3 years later.  (This is what I think today)
