Could stem cells offer hope?
« on: June 27, 2015, 12:00:51 AM »

I was wondering if in future it would be possible and maybe better to simply amputate the leg and replace with a new leg built from stem cells. Maybe this is not realistic? Does anyone have any knowledge of this topic?

sounds like a good idea

takes 1.5 years to recover from lengthening

regrowing leg  after amputation should take about 3 months

I´m not trolling. I realize its probably not possible right now. But cud´t it be possible down the line? They are already regrowing some parts of organs, so why not an entire leg? What is better, breaking a functional leg and forcing it to stay broken and forcing the nerves and muscles to stretch in the leg or removing the leg and replacing it with a fully functional leg that is longer?

Maybe its a stupid idea. I don't know a lot about stem cells. If it is ever possible it could provide a far faster, less painful and more natural solution to the issue.

I don't want to say anything to get me banned but dude IF POSSIBLE why wouldn't you just want stem cells injected into your bones? Basically go through the Capt America process? Whenever such a thing as amputation and workable 3d printed limbs becomes a possibility then there sure as hell would be a way to stimulate bone growth.

As far as I know once the bones have ossified they can longer grow. If there would be some way to reverse that process and make the bones start to grow again that would be great. I just want to discuss what possible future alternatives there could be. The current process is far from ideal.

The only way would be implanting growth plates back.Regrow them. There is some research. Those would be implants. Who knows when.

Stem cell technology is so crude at this stage that it will be at least 100 years before we can reliably grow an entire limb. We could probably regrow a limb by cloning an individual for harvesting parts from (like in The Island), but that would be unethical.

Even if we could regrow a limb, the problem would be interfacing that limb with your existing brain and spine. Blood vessels, bones, and muscles from a transplanted limb could be put together, though it would be a 5-10+ hour procedure requiring multiple surgeons.

But nerves cannot so easily be reconnected. This is why people with spinal cord injuries remain parapalegic after. The nerves do not regrow or reconnect, and we have no reliable way of making them cooperate.

So short answer is no. The advances required in medical science to pull this off would be incredible.

The better solution is likely to make human growth hormone more widely available to short kids so they don't have to do any of this at all. Though that approach creates other problems as well.

Pse check doctor Lee, Donghoon (he is in the list of doctor), he already applied stem cells method (bone marrow and PRP) for his patients. This is I quote;
"Worry-free bone regeneration
- lengthening surgery using combined bone marrow concentration (BMAC) & platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy which enhances bone regeneration, first established in the world"

For DR.Lee. Looks like they do the same technique for lengthening(nails), then they use stem cells for regeneration, is that right?

Thanks for the very detailed response. Now I understand why its is much harder than I first imagined.

Dear all

There is NO Medical evidence that proofs the advantadge of using aspiranted cells from bone marrow. In my experience I have used it + PRP as a carrier to avoid cell spreading in cases of post traumatic pseudoarthritis and I must say results have been excellent.
Cannot say of better than using cancellous bone graft...but consolidation was very fast and bone quality excellent.

There are not Medical studies and I think it is very difficult to design one as all trauma cases are very variable and not comparable one to the others.

When using bone marrow cells, it is very important the technique at extraction and the manipulation methodology of the aspirated cells. We normally perform microscopic test of the sample obtained so we are dure There are cells in the aspirated marrow.

We migth be far of a reliable clinical trial, but my experience so far has been very good.
