knee joint stiffness after Femur LON
« on: March 03, 2015, 04:03:39 AM »

Hi guys, I had a femur lengthening 6 month ago. from there onward I have a stiffness knee until this point of time. I haven't been attending any PT but had been trying to Bend myself. I didn't see any improvement from that and consulted my OS about it. he have book an appointment for me to see a PT next week. FYI, My frames had removed but I still couldn't bend Over 90 degree.

I'm actually quite worry that Pt won't be able to help me and I can't bend my knee again as is already 6month long.

I know there is a procedure where they can put me to sleep and force to bend my leg. Do I benefit in this procedure after such a long time?

Any suggestions please. Appreciate it.

Idk dude. I had my femur lengthened by 7.5 cm with exfix only. I'm one month post frame removal, I started PT with a lag-time of 2 weeks, as I've been instructed to be careful not to break or deform the newly generated bone, and I've been doing PT kinda lazely. I'm now really close to 90 degrees knee flexion, probably 85. I've also ordered this item: http://openi.nlm.nih.gov/detailedresult.php?img=3435906_10.1177_1941738111424124-fig3&req=4

It's exactly what you need to fight a stiff knee, but it still hasn't arrived. You can wear it at night, the tension it is able to put is rather huge. I'm pretty sure as soon as it arrives I'll restore full knee flexion in no time.

If physical therapy doesn't do anything to resolve the issue then you may need a quadricepsplasty.

Some articles about it.

So in your lengthening phrase, you didn't go for any PT too?

This quadricepsplasty Surgery look scary. Is it normal to have stiffness when doing femur lengthening?  I suspect the reason that I have restricted ROM because of the scare tissue. I have nailling inserted on my knee.

I did PT, but nothing specifcally to improve my knee flexion, as I've found it completely useless with the frames on - the pins simply don't let you do that. It IS absolutely normal to get a stiff knee after femoral lengthening or in fact after just wearing an external frame on your femurs for some time. The stiffness in this case is mainly caused by a long immobilization. But I don't think it's going to magically disappear if you don't work on it at all. Quadricepsplasty is unnaccessary, I've had like 30 degrees ROM 4 weeks ago, now it's 90.

What did you do to  improve the ROM ? Just bend as much as possible and hold it for a few min?

Pretty much. And do it for at least few hours a day. And be careful not to break your newly generated bone. The knee ROM splint that I linked above is a very good solution. You can wear it at night, so you don't have to waste any time during the day.

found you.

:)

I don't know if it is a good or bad idea zioon. its your choice. but all I can say is this.

a plumber can fk up a toilet,
an electrician can fk up an electrical outlet,
a garbage man can crash a truck,
and a surgeon can fk up a leg by forcing it to do something it cant do.

in all these cases they are professionals in their field. people fk up. there is no medical way to know 100% how far your leg can be stretched. its guess work.

good luck with whatever decision you choose. I don't know what is right for you.
