Dec 2016 - Russia
« on: February 23, 2015, 05:40:26 AM »

Anyone up to it? Just wondering. Gotta plan ahead! may do ext femurs with either dr bagirov (Moscow), or dr solomin (st pestersburg). I mean, I can speak some Russian already so it should be quite alright, haha. Maybe doing 3 cm femurs.

I might be interested in doing 4-5CM external femurs with Dr. Solomon if you can figure out all the travel/visa/accommodation details. Dr. Solomin doesn't help with any of these as that's not his job. I also don't speak Russian, so it would be nice to go with someone who does. Plus you seem like a pretty cool guy from your diary  8) I'm not studying medicine like you, but I am studying biomedical engineering at the moment. I might be able to afford take a break in fall 2016-2017, though, during which I could travel to Russia to lengthen my femurs with you. I won't be passing 5CM because external femurs are horribly painful and having the frames on for too long is really dangerous for ROM. I would be highly interested in LATN if that option is offered.

It would be my first and probably only LL.

I think the visa is a non-issue but getting there might be trouble. (just find a visa agent, they will do it for you. You do not even need his address, I believe). The visa can be arranged thru ur agent for 3 months or 6 months. I might stay only 1-2 months for lengthening phase.

DOes he offer LATN? Yes 5 cm is already not advisable. Less is better. This is because there will be forces on the fixators which can lead to bending and misalignment issues. 3-4 cm is the best.

And ye, the pain is much worse than tibia according to my friend who did both.

If everything works out, I'll do my femurs (exfix\LON\LATN) for 3,5-4,5cms with Dr Kulesh and Dr Solomin this summer. I consider writing a diary when the time has come, maybe it'll be helpful to you.

PLEASE do write a diary, it will be very helpful to us if we decide to go ahead.
Crazy6 on the old forum is vehemently against ex-fix (LON) that ruined his entire leg. Is it merely due to the incompetence of Sarin? I  mean, the X-rays showed it very clearly.

Exclide did 7,5 on his femur with an exfix, so I am not too worried since I'd only do half. I also think that Dr. Solomin and Dr. Kulesh are way better than Dr. Sarin.
If it turns out it's risky I'll do tibias though, I won't risk my health for 4cms of height.
Dr. Solomin said external femoral lengthening can be discussed after some x-rays are done to evalute the risks.

p.s. They do have experience in LON\LATN for femurs, they wouldn't offer it otherwise. The reply to my question was, that it's just very painful and that it's recommended to stay below 5cm per segment.

so they routinely do LON/LATN femurs?

do they do pure ex-fix femurs (just wondering)

He said that it depends on my x-rays but they do offer it. I'd rather ask exclide he did bis surgery with them.

Offering is a different idea from routinely performing it.
How many LL  cases he done for femur, on LON/LATN, that's the key question.
And what nails does he use

I honestly have no idea yet, as I said, I'd only consider femur lengthening with an exfix if they have enough experience. I'll ask him about that in the future.

Ok so he just told me that he is not going to start with my femurs. He´ll do tibias at first and if everything works out well, he'll to my femurs afterwards.

he told me tibias are less risky. and usually does them first.
