From what I've read online, even though the fibula bone doesn't carry the bulk of the body's weight, it sill carries some of our weight and also plays an important role when it comes to stability and overall athletic performance. Nevertheless, from all the pictures of X-rays I've seen so far, virtually all lower leg LL patients end up with misaligned fibulae at the end of their lengthening, because they're never fixated in a way that would allow otherwise.
Even with externals only, when your lower legs are pierced by so many wires, the doctors don't seem to pass those wires through the fibula to ensure their final alignment.
Another issue regarding this was raised over at the old forum. There was a big argument because Dr Mahboubian didn't use screws to fix Tall's fibulae during LL and people were saying that he'd end up with premature arthritis because of this.
When asked, doctors say that these things aren't really issues and that everything will be fine, but I'm guessing they tell us this because they actually don't know (or currently can't) do it any other way. I'm sure that if they could, they'd leave us with perfectly aligned fibulae, just the way they were before (if they're really professional and not greedy monkeys).
Any thoughts on these issues?
Does anyone know of a method/doctor that will keep your fibulae nicely aligned just like the original ones?
