Lengthen 1.5 mm, grow 2 cm?
« on: October 10, 2014, 02:18:58 PM »

There was something odd today at the check up and I wonder if other people have experienced that. We were supposed to lengthen 1.25 mm (5 times a day 0.25 mm) for 11 days. We did as we were told and expected 1.4 cm lengthening. However X-rays showed a full 2 centimeters bone growth. Has that happened to anybody else?  Or does anyone has an idea how that could happen?

Could be an error in measurement.

Whoever is measuring you is probably an idiot.

possible an idiot doing the measurements.
but also your doctor might have performed an initial distraction during the first operation.

Hmm I am not sure about that. 11days ago I saw her x ray. At that point 24 mm was measured between bone halves. Margin of error maybe 1mm. Now it was 45 mm. Saw it with my own eyes. The previous x rays were checked again but the assistent was unable to explain the extra length.

are you saying that the operation did not just happen 11 days ago?

I think the situation wasn't clarified properly.

it could be anything from slight device malfunction, to incorrect patient turning, to incorrect x ray techniques.

No, it was not 11 days after the LL surgery (although she did have a surgery too, but that was in her upper leg). She had a check-up just before the surgery to remove the external fixator in her upper leg, and they saw there was still 1,5 cm to go. They decided to start lengthening her lower leg again (which had been stopped a few weeks earlier) to get that extra length. We had 11 days to do it, 1,25 mm a day. I think the device malfunction is the only thing that makes sense to me. The Xrays are professional and I may have sometimes turned a fraction of a mm too much, but no 33%. So I wondered if that is common, that on a device one full round is not excactly 1 mm.
