Title: Bad eating habits and liack of sleep during childhood. Did I stunt my growth?
Post by: Tylerdurden389 on August 30, 2014, 07:48:21 PM
Hey everyone. Ok, quick recap. I'm 5-2.25. My dad at his peak was about 5-4, as everyone on his side of my family, for the most part, are very short. Some of my shortest relatives, were like 4-6 lol. My mom at her tallest was maybe 5-0, 5-1. She is the only sister, and my uncle's (her brothers) are around 5-7 and 5-9. Their kids (my cousins) are all taller than me, and they're girls btw lol. Not much taller, but they all vary between 5-3 to 5-6. Now my brother, who seems to have gotten more genes from my mom's side, is about 5-6.5. He finally outgrew me around the time he was 13. So he's got just over 4 inches on me.

Now, as a kid, I was the pickiest eater you can imagine. I ate nothing but snacks and candy for the most part. The only real food I ate was waffles/pancakes for breakfast, plain turkey sandwiches without any dressings or toppings (crust cut off lol) for lunch, and usually thin chicken cutlets with mashed potatoes, hamburgers (home cooked) with fries, meatloaf, or thin roast beef for dinner. I may have hated eating good food, but at the same time I was already not eating a lot of the stuff that you hear everyone saying they try to avoid due to the fat/calories (bacon, cheese, mayo, cookies, cake, ice cream, etc...). We only ate McDonalds once a week. And I only ate small servings. I also only ate the meat. No buns. Guess you could say I pioneered the Atkins diet of avoiding bread and carbs a good 20 years before it became a thing lol.

On top of my terribly diet, I also would stay up during the night. I've always been a light sleeper, and I had my little rule of staying up to watch the sunrise if I woke up after 4am, (what can I say, I've always been sentimental like that lol).

I also started working out right before I turned 14, but I didn't really lift seriously until about a half year later (got a bench at Christmas). And even then, I never trained like a professional athlete probably until I was 16 or 17. Plus I've heard that it's only a myth that lifting weights closes growth plates prematurely. Taking steroids allegedly does, but I've never taken them.

Anyway, what do you guys think? How much of a factor did these 3 things play in my final adult height? I've thought about it for over a decade and I think that, had these factors not been present, I'd have probably been somewhere between 5-4 and 5-5. I don't think I have enough genes from my mom's side (where everyone is taller) to have made it to 5-6 like my brother did. But at the same time, I do believe these factors did play a part in stunting my growth, even just a little.

This has been already discussed just a day ago. Yes, you did stunt your growth. No one can tell you really by how much. It doesn't matter anyways at this point, you should look ahead.

Oh I agree. Better to stop focusing on the past, which can't be changed, and focus on the future, which can. Still though, this is the only time I've ever had a chance to really discuss this with people in the same position as me (considering I don't really know any other short people like myself). So I was interested in getting some perspectives from like minded individuals.

Sorry for bringing up a topic already covered here on the site. I've been on the site for the last 3 hours and still going through all the threads. I felt it was important to introduce myself first before I began randomly posting and no one knew who I was lol.

At the end of the day, height really depends on genes. One of my buddies who is really tall never slept a lot (Just like you), and was eating a lot of junk food when he was young which is not healthy at all and can stunt your growth. Guess what, he is the tallest in his family. Like I said, it really depends MOSTLY on genes unfortunately... His family is really tall, and his grandfather was almost 2 metres (6'7").

Actually sadboy, that makes me feel better. Knowing that my diet and sleeping habits as a kid didn't make a difference makes me feel like I can put that thought to rest (no pun intended lol).

I agree with sadboy.  Unless you were severely malnourished and sleep-deprived, it probably didn't make much if any difference.

One of my buddies
Denying and ignoring all the available scientific data that proves the importance of nutrition for growth and final height for one unclear and particular case isn't very smart.

It just is not.

It's all just speculation, maybe you did or maybe you didn't. Id just accept the past and move on.

I didn't deny any of that. Why do you think I posted on my comment "it really depends MOSTLY on genes" and I even wrote the word mostly in caps for people like you.
