Title: Can tibial lengthening be done to 10cm
Post by: tolly on January 01, 2015, 07:58:18 AM
1) I am a male from india.I need to gain 10 cm by hook or by rook. I am 5'8 and want to reach 6 exact. :) My Doctor wants me to do LON  on tibias since it is less risky that femurs plus i will be in and out in 5 months give or take with out the external fixator.I am going to get it done in india itself as i have a low budget.

2) Opting for 2 surgeries is not an option since i dont have the time and money for the 2nd surgery. :'(

3) i dont care about my proportions or athletic ablity.I really want to find out " how do people get their tibias lengthened in Beijing till 10 cm where as other Doc only recommend 7.5 cm.

4) I have been improving my flexibility over the past few months.

You want to permanently affect your athletic ability and even your ability to run just so you can say you're 6'0? If you don't have the money for two surgeries do a max of 6 cm and call it a day so you avoid all the permanent problems you'll get with 10 cm on tibs.

technically possibly yes.
depends on ur bone length.
also your soft tissue.
bagirov is confident of recovering full ability after 8 cm. so why not 9 cm?
RGkey done 9 cm. read his diary.
not sure about 10 cm.

Can be done if you lengthen slowly and have physio therapy every day. Maybe recover to 85%

It's possible, but the soft tissues in the tibias usually have a very hard time lengthening past 6.5-7 cm according to Dr. Paley and other doctors. I doubt you'd have a good time lengthening to 10 cm on your tibias, but the only real way to know would be to break your legs and start the lengthening process.

You shouldn't go beyond 5cms really. Even 5cms is shakey let alone 6.

Isn't a general rule of thumb that lengthening massive amounts 8cm + would be better tolerated by the femurs ?

You are normally able to lengthen about 20% of your bone length safely. That means that you should be able to lengthen about 8.3 cm on your tibias.

Unless you have preposterous starting proportions, you are going to look absolutely ridiculous, have an immense healing period, and never gain back to 100%. It won't exactly be the glorious 6 ft you are envisioning.
